'The Visitor' Coming to Blu-ray this October[teaser]Anchor Bay Entertainment has issued retailers an October release for the acclaimed indie drama 'The Visitor.'[/teaser] 'The Visitor' earned high marks from top critics during its theatrical run this past Spring, and star Richard Jenkins' lead performance is already receiving Oscar buzz. Anchor Bay will issue the Blu-ray on October 7, day-and-date with the standard. Anchor Bay has yet to issue any tech specs for 'The Visitor,' but we expect the full announcement in the days ahead. Rob Zombie Confirms October Arrival for 'Halloween' Blu-ray[teaser]Filmmaker Rob Zombie has confirmed via his official MySpace page that a deluxe Blu-ray of his hit 'Halloween' remake is currently being planned for an October release.[/teaser] As first revealed on www.myspace.com/halloweenmovie, Zombie surprised diehard Myers fans with a posting that has leaked early details of a three-disc Blu-ray edition of his $60 million-grossing 'Halloween' reboot. Pegging an October 21 street date (timed to coincide with the release of a new special edition DVD version), the Blu-ray is set to include an all-new four-and-a-half-hour documentary on the making of the film entitled "Michael Lives." Further specs are still TBA, but given the three-disc configuration, all of the extras included on the previous two-disc Unrated DVD version (released last year) appear likely. At press time, the Weinstein Co. has neither confirmed nor denied plans for any 'Halloween' release on Blu-ray, but given Zombie's official thumbs up, the prognosis looks good. New Line Planning September Bow for 'Sex and the City' Blu-ray[teaser]The girls of 'Sex and the City' are headed to high-def, with retailers reporting that New Line is prepping a September Blu-ray bow for the blockbuster hit.[/teaser] Earning nearly $150 million at the domestic box office (and still counting), the smash TV staple 'Sex and the City' proved just as popular on the big screen. Though New Line/Warner have yet to officially announce a street date, retailers are saying that the studio will debut the Blu-ray on September 23 (day-and-date with the standard DVD). CMT Brings Exclusive 'Elvis: Viva Las Vegas' Blu-ray to Wal-mart[teaser]The King is headed to high-def in the Sam's Club and Wal-mart exclusive Blu-ray release of the CMT retrospective special, 'Elvis: Viva Las Vegas.'[/teaser] Celebrating Elvis' long career in Vegas and his enduring musical legacy, 'Viva Las Vegas' features a host of performances by today's top stars. Among the artists reinterpreting the King's top hits are Toby Keith and Joe Perry performing "Mystery Train;" Faith Hill with the gospel classic "Peace in the Valley;" Chris Daughtry singing "Suspicious Minds" and Celine Dion delivering "Can't Help Falling In Love." Set to debut on CMT August 11, the network will release Blu-ray and standard DVD versions of 'Elvis: Viva Las Vegas' only one day later, on August 12, exclusively through Wal-mart and Sam's Club. (At press time, there are no plans to release the Blu-ray through other retailers.) Extras include additional footage not seen during the original network broadcast. Blue Underground Announces 'Final Countdown'[teaser]Blue Underground has confirmed its debut high-def launch title, announcing plans to bring 'The Final Countdown' to Blu-ray this October.[/teaser] Though not a box office hit during its original 1980 theatrical run, the sci-fi thriller has since enjoyed a long shelf life on video as a cult favorite. Making good on its earlier pledge to launch next-gen support by the end of the year, Blue Underground will launch 'The Final Countdown' on Blu-ray October 28. Tech specs are impressive, boasting a BD-50 dual-layer presentation with newly-remastered 1080p video and English audio tracks in DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 7.1 Surround, Dolby TrueHD 7.1 Surround and Dolby Digital Surround EX. 'Romancing the Stone,' 'Jewel of the Nile' Coming to Blu-ray[teaser]Fox Home Entertainment has announced an October bow for the blockbuster romance-adventure 'Romancing the Stone' and its sequel, 'The Jewel of the Nile.'[/teaser] Starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as mismatched lovers in search of an ancient hidden treasure, 'Romancing the Stone' propelled Turner to superstardom and gave director Robert Zemeckis his first bona fide box office smash. Fox will give the film its next-gen debut on October 14, bringing along with it the film's less well-received sequel 'The Jewel of the Nile' (also starring Douglas and Turner). Both stand-alone releases will receive the BD-50 dual-layer treatment, with 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video and DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround sound. Sony Planning '88 Minutes' Blu-ray[teaser]Sony Pictures is bringing the Al Pacino crime thriller '88 Minutes' to Blu-ray this September.[/teaser] Starring Pacino and Alicia Witt, '88 Minutes' failed to make much of an impression on critics or audiences, and grossed a meager $20 million at the domestic box office. Sony will give the film another shot on Blu-ray when it debuts the Jon Avnet-directed film September 16, day-and-date with the standard DVD. Extras include an audio commentary with Avnet, a pair of featurettes ("Director's Point of View," "The Character Within") and an alternate ending.
