HBO Reveals New Details on 'Game of Thrones' Prequel & Final Season Release Date[teaser]The premium cable network will return to the Seven Kingdoms next year.[/teaser] As detailed in new reports from Deadline, HBO has revealed more information related to its recently announced Game of Thrones prequel series pilot. Likewise, the network has also announced a release window for the upcoming eighth and final season of the original series. Though an exact date has not been confirmed yet, according to HBO programming president Casey Bloys, the final season of Game of Thrones is set to premiere in the first half of 2019. The season will feature six episodes. Meanwhile, Bloys also offered a few more tidbits about the network's spin-off pilot from George R.R. Martin and Jane Goldman. The show will be a prequel set eight thousand years before Game of Thrones. As such, none of the cast from the current show will appear in the new series. Instead, the story will focus on a very different time in Westeros' history with a new ensemble featuring a mix of strong female and male characters. Here's the previously released synopsis from HBO: Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros' history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it's not the story we think we know. George R. R. Martin, the author behind the Song of Ice and Fire book series, co-wrote the story for the pilot with Jane Goldman (Kingsman, X-Men: First Class). Goldman also handled the teleplay and is set to act as the showrunner for the still untitled project. The script is the first Game of Thrones spinoff to receive a pilot order, beating out four other potential spinoffs. Some of those additional scripts are no longer under consideration while others remain a possibility for a future greenlight -- though HBO has not confirmed an exact number. The prequel pilot is gearing up to begin casting, and production is expected to start next year. A director has not been announced yet. If the pilot is picked up for a full season, the show will premiere sometime after Game of Thrones finishes its run. Sources: Deadline 1, Deadline 2Posted Thu Jul 26, 2018 at 08:25 AM PDT by: -
HBO Officially Greenlights 'Deadwood' Movie[teaser]The long-awaited HBO movie is being prepped for a 2019 release. [/teaser] According to reports by Variety and Deadline, HBO has officially given the greenlight to a Deadwood movie. The film will serve as a continuation of the TV series which originally ran for three seasons on HBO from 2004 to 2006. The news comes from HBO programming president Casey Bloys, who made the announcement at the TCA summer press tour. Bloys says the movie is set to start shooting in October for an anticipated spring 2019 premiere. With that said, the release window is not locked down and could be subject to change. Series creator David Milch has written the script and the movie will be directed by Dan Minahan. Minahan previously directed four episodes of the original Deadwood TV series, along with several other shows for HBO, including installments of True Blood and Game of Thrones. A potential Deadwood movie has been on the table ever since the series was canceled after its third season in 2006, but scheduling conflicts and other creative and production issues have always prevented a greenlight. Plot details for the film have not been announced yet, but most of the show's original cast is expected to return. The original series was set in 1876, and focused on the inhabitants of the Deadwood settlement in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The show starred Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, Paula Malcomson, John Hawkes, Molly Parker, Jim Beaver, W. Earl Brown, Kim Dickens, Brad Dourif, Anna Gunn, Jeffrey Jones, William Sanderson, Robin Weigert, and Titus Welliver. Deadwood: The Complete Series is currently available on Blu-ray. The 13-disc collection includes all three seasons and 36 episodes of the show. Order the Blu-ray Sources: Variety, DeadlinePosted Wed Jul 25, 2018 at 01:50 PM PDT by: -

Criterion Details October 2018 Blu-ray Titles[teaser]Rob Reiner's The Princess Bride, Brian De Palma's Sisters, and more are all in the works for Blu-ray.[/teaser] In an early announcement to retailers, Criterion is preparing The Naked Prey, Eight Hours Don’t Make a Day, Shampoo, Sisters, and The Princess Bride for Blu-ray throughout the month of October. The Naked Prey (October 2) - Glamorous leading man turned idiosyncratic auteur Cornel Wilde created in the 1960s and ’70s a handful of gritty, violent explorations of the nature of man, none more memorable than The Naked Prey.In the early nineteenth century, after an ivory-hunting safari offends a group of South African hunters, the colonialists are captured and hideously tortured. A lone marksman (Wilde) is released, without clothes or weapons, to be hunted for sport, and he begins a harrowing journey through savanna and jungle back to a primitive state. Distinguished by vivid widescreen camera work and unflinchingly ferocious action sequences, The Naked Prey is both a propulsive, stripped-to-the-bone narrative and a meditation on the concept of civilization. - Restored high-definition digital transfer, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray- Audio commentary from 2007 by film scholar Stephen Prince- “John Colter’s Escape,” a 1913 written record of the trapper’s flight from Blackfoot Indians—which was the inspiration for The Naked Prey—read by actor Paul Giamatti- Original soundtrack cues created by director Cornel Wilde and ethnomusicologist Andrew Tracey, along with a written statement by Tracey on the score- Trailer- PLUS: An essay by film critic Michael Atkinson and a 1970 interview with Wilde Order the Blu-ray Eight Hours Don’t Make a Day (October 9) - Commissioned to make a working-class family drama for public television, up-and-coming director Rainer Werner Fassbinder took the assignment and ran, dodging expectations by depicting social realities in West Germany from a critical—yet far from cynical—perspective. Over the course of several hours, the sprawling story tracks the everyday triumphs and travails of the young toolmaker Jochen (Gottfried John) and many of the people populating his world, including the woman he loves (Hanna Schygulla), his eccentric nuclear family, and his fellow workers, with whom he bands together to improve conditions on the factory floor. Rarely screened since its popular but controversial initial broadcast, Eight Hours Don’t Make a Dayrates as a true discovery, one of Fassbinder’s earliest and most tender experiments with the possibilities of melodrama. - New 2K digital restoration by the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray- “Eight Hours Don’t Make a Day”: A Series Becomes a Family Reunion, a 2017 documentary directed by Juliane Maria Lorenz, featuring interviews with actors Hanna Schygulla, Irm Hermann, Wolfgang Schenck, and Hans Hirschmüller- New interview with film scholar Jane Shattuc- New English subtitle translation- PLUS: An essay by scholar Moira Weigel Order the Blu-ray Shampoo (October 16) - Shampoo gives us a day in the life of George, a Beverly Hills hairdresser and Lothario who runs around town on the eve of the 1968 presidential election trying to make heads or tails of his financial and romantic entanglements. His attempts to scrape together the money to open his own salon are continually sidetracked by the distractions presented by his lovers—played brilliantly by Goldie Hawn, Julie Christie, and Lee Grant (in an Oscar-winning performance). Star Warren Beatty dreamed up the project, cowrote the script with Robert Towne, and enlisted Hal Ashby as director, and the resulting carousel of doomed relationships is an essential seventies farce, a sharp look back at the sexual politics and self-absorption of the preceding decade. - 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray- Alternate 5.1 surround soundtrack, presented in DTS-HD Master Audio on the Blu-ray- New conversation between critics Mark Harris and Frank Rich- Excerpt from a 1998 appearance by producer, cowriter, and actor Warren Beatty on The South Bank Show- Trailer- PLUS: An essay by Rich Order the Blu-ray Sisters (October 23) - Margot Kidder is Danielle, a beautiful model separated from her Siamese twin, Dominique. When a hotshot reporter (Jennifer Salt) suspects Dominique of a brutal murder, she becomes dangerously ensnared in the sisters’ insidious sibling bond. A scary and stylish paean to female destructiveness, Brian De Palma’s first foray into horror voyeurism is a stunning amalgam of split-screen effects, bloody birthday cakes, and a chilling score by frequent Hitchcock collaborator Bernard Herrmann. - New 4K digital restoration, approved by director Brian De Palma, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray- New interview with actor Jennifer Salt- Interviews from 2004 with De Palma, actors William Finley and Charles Durning, and producer Edward R. Pressman- Audio from a 1973 discussion with De Palma at the AFI- Appearance from 1970 by actor Margot Kidder on The Dick Cavett ShowMore!- PLUS: An essay by critic Carrie Rickey, excerpts from a 1973 interview with De Palma on the making of the film, and a 1973 article by De Palma on working with composer Bernard Hermann Order the Blu-ray The Princess Bride (October 30) - A high-spirited adventure that pits true love against inconceivable odds, The Princess Bride has charmed legions of fans with its irreverent gags, eccentric ensemble, and dazzling swordplay. A kid (Fred Savage), home sick from school, grudgingly allows his grandfather (Peter Falk) to read him a dusty storybook—which is how we meet the innocent Buttercup (Robin Wright, in her breakout role), about to marry the nefarious Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon) though her heart belongs to Westley (Cary Elwes). The wedding plans are interrupted, however, by a mysterious pirate, a vengeful Spaniard, and a good-natured giant, in a tale full of swashbuckling, romance, and outrageously hilarious spoofery. Directed by Rob Reiner from an endlessly quotable script by Oscar winner William Goldman, The Princess Bride reigns as a fairy-tale classic. - New 4K digital transfer, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray- Audio commentary from 1996 featuring director Rob Reiner, screenwriter William Goldman, producer Andrew Scheinman, and actors Billy Crystal and Peter Falk- Edited 1987 audiobook reading of Goldman’s novel The Princess Bride by Reiner- New program about Goldman’s screenplay- New program about Goldman’s tapestry based on the film- Archival interviews with Reiner, Goldman, and actors Crystal, Cary Elwes, Christopher Guest, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Fred Savage, and Robin Wright- New interview with art director Richard Holland- Programs about makeup, fencing, and fairy tales- On-set video diary filmed and narrated by Elwes- Five behind-the-scenes videos with commentaries from 1996 by Reiner, Scheinman, and Crystal- Trailer- PLUS: An essay by author Sloane Crosley and, for the Blu-ray edition, Goldman’s introduction to his Princess Bride script from the 1995 collection Four Screenplays,in a lavishly illustrated, clothbound book Order the Blu-ray You can find the latest specs for all of the titles listed above linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where they're indexed throughout October.Posted Fri Jul 20, 2018 at 07:25 AM PDT by: -
