Douglas Rain, the Voice of HAL 9000 from 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, Dies at 90[teaser]The man behind one of cinema's most iconic voices has passed away.[/teaser] As reported by CTV News and the Stratford Festival, actor Douglas Rain has died at the age of 90. Rain was best known as the voice of HAL 9000 in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. "Canadian theatre has lost one of its greatest talents and a guiding light in its development," said Antoni Cimolino, the artistic director of the Stratford Festival, in a press release. Rain was born in Winnipeg, Man., in 1928 and passed away from natural causes in Stratford, Ont on November 11. Beyond his iconic role as the sentient AI computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey and its 1984 sequel 2010: The Year We Make Contact, Rain was also a founding member of the Stratford Festival and helped establish the theatre company in 1952. Throughout his career, he performed in theatre all across Canada, including roles like Malvolio in Twelfth Night, the title role in King John, and Prince Hal in Henry IV, Part 1. Likewise, Rain was nominated for a Tony Award in 1972 for his performance as William Cecil in Vivat! Vivat! Regina!. "Douglas shared many of the same qualities as Kubrick's iconic creation: precision, strength of steel, enigma and infinite intelligence, as well as a wicked sense of humour," said Cimolino. "But those of us lucky enough to have worked with Douglas soon solved his riddle and discovered that at the centre of his mystery lay warmth and humanity, evidenced in his care for the young members of our profession." Rain is survived by his two sons, daughter, granddaughter, and daughter-in-law. Source: Stratford Festival via CTV NewsPosted Mon Nov 12, 2018 at 12:45 PM PST by: -

BREAKING BAD Movie Reportedly in Development by Creator Vince Gilligan[teaser]A film set in the Breaking Bad franchise is in the works.[/teaser] According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Vince Gilligan is developing a new two-hour Breaking Bad film. Gilligan previously served as the creator and showrunner of the original series, and is also the co-creator of the current spin-off series Better Call Saul. Details on the proposed project are currently scarce, and it's not yet clear whether the film is being planned for a theatrical or television debut. Likewise, it's unknown if the plot will take place before or after the events of the original show or if series stars Bryan Cranston or Aaron Paul will reprise their character. And though a full plot synopsis has not been released yet, according to The Hollywood Reporter's sources, the story will "follow the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom." For those familiar with how the original show ended, this detail could indicate a focus on the character of Jesse Pinkman following the series finale. Vince Gilligan is expected to write, executive produce, and potentially direct the film. Meanwhile, Breaking Bad executive producers Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein are also reportedly involved. Though Gilligan, Sony, and AMC have not confirmed the movie's existence just yet, production is rumored to begin later this month in New Mexico under the likely fake title of Greenbrier. Breaking Bad originally premiered on AMC in 2008 and ran for five seasons. Meanwhile, the spin-off series Better Call Saul recently finished its fourth season and is set to return for a fifth season next year. If the rumored Breaking Bad film is indeed being eyed for a television debut on AMC, the move would align nicely with other recent news involving a series of Walking Dead TV movies being developed for the network. DEADPOOL 2 Set to Return to Theaters as PG-13 Rated ONCE UPON A DEADPOOL[teaser]"The Merc with a Slightly Cleaner Mouth" is hitting theaters in December.[/teaser] As reported by Deadline, 20th Century Fox is gearing up to re-release Deadpool 2 as a new revamped PG-13 edit dubbed Once Upon a Deadpool. This reconfigured version will cut down on the original film's R-rated profanity and violence while also adding some fresh footage here and there in the form of a playful new framing device. The limited engagement release will premiere in theaters on December 12 and will run until Christmas Eve. The recently shot framing device was filmed in just one day and will consist of eight scenes interspersed throughout the flick. These sequences take their inspiration from Rob Reiner's The Princess Bride, and will feature Deadpool kidnapping Fred Savage in order to tell him a bedtime story. Savage originally starred in The Princess Bride as a child being read a book by his grandfather. Actor Ryan Reynolds came up with the appropriately meta concept along with Deadpool 2 screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Though the Deadpool films are famous for their irreverent and outrageous R-rated antics, the PG-13 cut will allow the movie to reach a larger and younger audience. Likewise, the new edit is seen as a way of testing out a more Disney-friendly version of the franchise in anticipation of Fox's upcoming acquisition by the company. It's not yet clear what Disney's Marvel Studios has in mind for the character, and this could be a way to see if Wade Wilson is a viable fit for the MCU. With that said, the decision to pull the trigger on a PG-13 Deadpool 2 didn't come lightly to star Ryan Reynolds. Speaking to Deadline, Reynolds said, "Fox has been asking for a PG-13 basically since the start in 2006. I've said no since 2006. Now, this one time, I said 'Yes' on two conditions. First, a portion of the proceeds had to go to charity. Second, I wanted to kidnap Fred Savage. The second condition took some explaining…" On that note, for every ticket sold to Once Upon a Deadpool, $1 will go to the F-ck Cancer campaign (which will be known as "Fudge Cancer" for the fundraising promotion). Meanwhile, it's not yet clear exactly how long the new Fred Savage scenes will be, but factoring in all the necessary cuts and newly added footage, the revamped PG-13 version will end up running about three minutes shorter than the original R-rated edit. Finally, for fans who still prefer their superhero flicks with plenty of blood, guts, and f-bombs, the R-rated cut of Deadpool 2 is now available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray.
