62% of People Say DIE HARD Isn't a Christmas Movie and They're Wrong[teaser]Can 62% of Americans be wrong? Yes. Yes, they can.[/teaser] For decades films fans have been debating one very important question: Is Die Hard a Christmas movie? Perhaps second only to "Did Han shoot first?", the seemingly simple query has led to a rather heated split between moviegoers. And according to a recent poll conducted by the Morning Consult/Hollywood Reporter, there might finally be a consensus on the answer. The only problem? The majority is wrong. Hans-Gruber-dead wrong! Per the results of the survey, 62% of the participants believe that Die Hard is not a Christmas movie. Meanwhile, only a quarter of the respondents think that the flick should be considered a Christmas movie. When the results are further broken down by demographics, it's revealed that people between the ages of 30-44 were the most supportive of the Christmas association -- with 37% of that group answering in the affirmative. Check out a full breakdown of the results per Morning Consult below: The poll was conducted between November 15 and November 18 among 2,200 U.S. adults. And while the site states that there's a margin of error of 2 percentage points… as far as I'm concerned it's way bigger than that! Yes, as you can probably guess by now, I'm one of the apparently few who do indeed believe that Die Hard is a Christmas flick. Sure, Bruce Willis himself might disagree, but I've got a few "well-reasoned" points to back up my claim: 1. It takes place on Christmas Eve This one is pretty self-explanatory. Sure, a story occurring during the holiday doesn't automatically make it a Christmas movie, but it definitely gets the snowball rolling. 2. The film is set during an actual Christmas party Expanding upon the above, Die Hard doesn't just take place during Christmas Eve -- it's actually set at a Christmas party complete with festive decorations and yuletide cheer… at least, until the terrorists show up. 3. Bruce Willis punishes the naughty Yeah, his form of punishment might be a little more extreme than a traditional lump of coal, but John McClane makes sure that all the naughty terrorists are punished and the nice hostages are saved. Hell, he even manages to scribble a festive warning across one of the dead criminals he takes out, writing "Now I have a machine gun. Ho-ho-ho" -- resulting in the greatest Christmas sweater ever made. 4. It works in a famous Christmas poem During the police siege on Nakatomi Plaza one of the flick's villains makes a snarky reference to a very famous Christmas poem when he says, "Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring -- except for the four assholes coming in the rear in standard two-by-two cover formation." You see, even the terrorists are getting in the spirit of the holiday! 5. An estranged couple reconciles Many who argue against Die Hard being a Christmas flick cite the film's violence and lack of holiday themes -- but McLane's desire to reunite with his estranged wife and kids could not be more in line with classic Christmas storytelling… right down to a final shot where the couple embraces as "Let it Snow" plays on in the background. 6. Come on, it just gives us a great excuse to watch it... again At the end of the day whether Die Hard is a certifiable Christmas flick or not doesn't really matter. It checks off enough of the requirements and evokes the general atmosphere of the holiday season, giving film fans a perfect excuse to snuggle up by the fire with their loved ones while John McClane kicks some major ass across their TV screen. The Russo Brothers Discuss X-MEN & DEADPOOL Joining Disney's MCU[teaser]The Infinity War directors have shared some new thoughts on the Fox merger and their new production company.[/teaser] As reported by Deadline and Business Insider, filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo are prepping for the upcoming addition of the X-Men and Deadpool franchises into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie rights to the popular characters are part of Disney's recent acquisition of 20th Century Fox. "I'm sure of it," said Joe Russo at the Business Insider Ignition conference when addressing whether or not the characters will transition into the MCU. Russo then went on to praise Disney CEO Bob Iger before adding, "I'm certain, with Kevin Feige, who also has been on an historic run in the business, that he is going to incorporate those characters under the large Marvel umbrella. We haven't spoken to him specifically about when he's going to do it, but I'm certain that that acquisition created great value in dimensionalizing Marvel and the stories that they can tell going forward." Feige, who serves as the President of Marvel Studios, is now poised to oversee Fox's big-screen Marvel characters under the larger MCU franchise once all the logistics have been hammered out. In addition to the X-Men and Deadpool, Disney's purchase of 20th Century Fox will also give them the film rights to the Fantastic Four characters as well. And outside of Marvel related news, the Russo Brothers also discussed their new production company, AGBO. According to Joe Russo, the company is being positioned by the brothers as "an artists collective to create content that excites us." Likewise, the venture will encourage experimenting with new storytelling forms as the brothers question the future viability and increasing predictability of the classic two-hour feature film format. The first AGBO titles will carry relatively modest budgets of around $10 million, and will include a film adaptation of author Nico Walker's novel Cherry. Meanwhile, Joe and Anthony Russo's still untitled sequel to Avengers: Infinity War is set to hit theaters on May 3, 2019. Criterion Details February 2019 Blu-ray Titles[teaser]Ingmar Bergman’s Shame, Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Berlin Alexanderplatz, and more are all in the works for Blu-ray.[/teaser] In an early announcement to retailers, Criterion is preparing Shame, La vérité, Berlin Alexanderplatz, Death in Venice, and To Sleep with Anger for Blu-ray throughout the month of February. Shame (February 5) - Ingmar Bergman’s Shame is at once an examination of the violent legacy of World War II and a scathing response to the escalation of the conflict in Vietnam. Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann star as musicians living in quiet retreat on a remote island farm, until the civil war that drove them from the city catches up with them there. Amid the chaos of the military struggle, vividly evoked by pyrotechnics and by Sven Nykvist’s handheld camera work, the two are faced with impossible moral choices that tear at the fabric of their relationship. This film, which contains some of the most devastating scenes in Bergman’s oeuvre, shows the impact of war on individual lives. New 2K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray Interviews with director Ingmar Bergman and a brief excerpt from a press conference for the film, recorded in 1967 and ’68 for Swedish television New interview with actor Liv Ullmann An Introduction to Ingmar Bergman, a 1968 documentary made during the film’s production, featuring an extensive interview with Bergman PLUS: An essay by critic Michael Sragow Order the Blu-ray La vérité (February 12) - Beautiful, troubled Dominique Marceau (Brigitte Bardot) came to bohemian Paris to escape the suffocation of provincial life, only to wind up in a courtroom, accused of a terrible crime: the murder of her lover (Sami Frey). As the trial commences and the lawyers begin tangling over Dominique’s fate, Henri-Georges Clouzot’s Oscar-nominated La vérité delves into her past, reconstructing her struggle to find a foothold in the city. What emerges is a nuanced portrait of an impulsive young woman misunderstood and mistreated by those around her, and of her ultimately tragic affair with an up-and-coming conductor. With an astonishing performance by Bardot, Clouzot’s affecting and intricately constructed film—a huge late-career success for the French master—renders a harsh verdict against a hypocritical and moralistic society. New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray Le scandale Clouzot, a sixty-minute documentary from 2017 on director Henri-Georges Clouzot Interview from 1960 with Clouzot Interview with actor Brigitte Bardot from the 1982 documentary Brigitte Bardot telle qu’elle New English subtitle translation PLUS: An essay by film scholar Ginette Vincendeau Order the Blu-ray Berlin Alexanderplatz (February 12) - Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s fifteen-hour Berlin Alexanderplatz, based on Alfred Döblin’s great modernist novel, was the crowning achievement of a prolific director who, at age thirty-four, had already made over thirty films. Fassbinder’s immersive epic follows the hulking, childlike ex-convict Franz Biberkopf (Günter Lamprecht) as he attempts to “become an honest soul” amid the corrosive urban landscape of Weimar-era Germany. With equal parts cynicism and humanity, Fassbinder details a mammoth portrait of a common man struggling to survive in a viciously uncommon time. High-definition digital restoration by the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation and Bavaria Media, supervised and approved by director of photography Xaver Schwarzenberger, with DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray Two documentaries by Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation president Juliane Lorenz: one from 2007 featuring interviews with the cast and crew, the other from 2006 on the restoration Hans-Dieter Hartl’s 1980 documentary Notes on the Making of “Berlin Alexanderplatz” Phil Jutzi’s 1931 feature-length film of Alfred Döblin’s novel, from a screenplay cowritten by Döblin himself Interview from 2007 with Peter Jelavich, author of “Berlin Alexanderplatz”: Radio, Film, and the Death of Weimar Culture PLUS: A book featuring an essay by filmmaker Tom Tykwer, reflections on the novel by Fassbinder and author Thomas Steinfeld, and an interview with Schwarzenberger Order the Blu-ray Death in Venice (February 19) - Based on the classic novella by Thomas Mann, this late-career masterpiece from Luchino Visconti is a meditation on the nature of art, the allure of beauty, and the inescapability of death. A fastidious composer reeling from a disastrous concert, Gustav von Aschenbach (Dirk Bogarde, in an exquisitely nuanced performance) travels to Venice to recover. There, he is struck by a vision of pure beauty in the form of a young boy (Björn Andrésen), his infatuation developing into an obsession even as rumors of a plague spread through the city. Setting Mann’s story of queer desire and bodily decay against the sublime music of Gustav Mahler, Death in Venice is one of cinema’s most exalted literary adaptations, as sensually rich as it is allegorically resonant. New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray Luchino Visconti: Life as in a Romance, a 2008 documentary about Visconti, featuring actors Burt Lancaster, Silvana Mangano, and Marcello Mastroianni; filmmakers Francesco Rosi and Franco Zeffirelli; and others Alla ricerca di Tadzio, a 1970 program on Visconti’s efforts to cast the role of Tadzio New program featuring literature and cinema scholar Stefano Albertini Interview from 2006 with costume designer Piero Tosi Excerpt from a 1990 program about the music in Visconti’s films, featuring Bogarde and actor Marisa Berenson Television broadcast from 1971 in which Visconti discusses the film Visconti’s Venice, a short 1970 behind-the-scenes documentary featuring Visconti and Bogarde Trailer PLUS: An essay by critic Dennis Lim Order the Blu-ray To Sleep with Anger (February 26) - A slow-burning masterwork of the early 1990s, this third feature by Charles Burnett is a singular piece of American mythmaking. In a towering performance, Danny Glover plays the enigmatic southern drifter Harry, a devilish charmer who turns up out of the blue on the South Central Los Angeles doorstep of his old friends. In short order, Harry’s presence turns a seemingly peaceful household upside down, exposing smoldering tensions between parents and children, tradition and change, virtue and temptation. Interweaving evocative strains of gospel and blues with rich, poetic-realist images, To Sleep with Anger is a sublimely stirring film from an autonomous artistic sensibility, a portrait of family resilience steeped in the traditions of black mysticism and folklore. New, restored 4K digital transfer, approved by director Charles Burnett, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray New interview program featuring Burnett, actors Danny Glover and Sheryl Lee Ralph, and associate producer Linda Koulisis A Walk with Charles Burnett, a new hour-long conversation between Burnett and filmmaker Robert Townsend that revisits Burnett’s films and shooting locations Short video tribute to Burnett produced for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Governors Awards ceremony in 2017 PLUS: An essay by critic Ashley Clark Order the Blu-ray You can find the latest specs for all of the titles listed above linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where they're indexed throughout February.Posted Mon Nov 19, 2018 at 09:15 PM PST by: -
Ryan Reynolds Kidnaps Fred Savage in Hilarious Trailer for ONCE UPON A DEADPOOL[teaser]"The Merc with a Slightly Cleaner Mouth" is hitting theaters in December.[/teaser] 20th Century Fox has released a trailer for its upcoming PG-13 re-release of Deadpool 2 dubbed Once Upon a Deadpool. This reconfigured version will cut down on the original film's R-rated profanity and violence while also adding some fresh footage here and there in the form of a playful new framing device. The limited engagement release will premiere in theaters on December 12 and will run until Christmas Eve. The recently shot framing device was filmed in just one day and will consist of eight scenes interspersed throughout the flick. These sequences take their inspiration from Rob Reiner's The Princess Bride, and will feature Deadpool kidnapping Fred Savage in order to tell him a bedtime story. Savage originally starred in The Princess Bride as a child being read a book by his grandfather. Actor Ryan Reynolds came up with the appropriately meta concept along with Deadpool 2 screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Check out the trailer below! Though the Deadpool films are famous for their irreverent and outrageous R-rated antics, the PG-13 cut will allow the movie to reach a larger and younger audience. Likewise, the new edit is seen as a way of testing out a more Disney-friendly version of the franchise in anticipation of Fox's upcoming acquisition by the company. It's not yet clear what Disney's Marvel Studios has in mind for the character, and this could be a way to see if Wade Wilson is a viable fit for the MCU. With that said, the decision to pull the trigger on a PG-13 Deadpool 2 didn't come lightly to star Ryan Reynolds. Speaking to Deadline, Reynolds said, "Fox has been asking for a PG-13 basically since the start in 2006. I've said no since 2006. Now, this one time, I said 'Yes' on two conditions. First, a portion of the proceeds had to go to charity. Second, I wanted to kidnap Fred Savage. The second condition took some explaining…" On that note, for every ticket sold to Once Upon a Deadpool, $1 will go to the F-ck Cancer campaign (which will be known as "Fudge Cancer" for the fundraising promotion). Meanwhile, it's not yet clear exactly how long the new Fred Savage scenes will be, but factoring in all the necessary cuts and newly added footage, the revamped PG-13 version will end up running about three minutes shorter than the original R-rated edit. Finally, for fans who still prefer their superhero flicks with plenty of blood, guts, and f-bombs, the R-rated cut of Deadpool 2 is now available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray.
