'The Predator' Stalks its Prey in Explosive First Teaser Trailer[teaser]The hunt will begin again in September.[/teaser] 20th Century Fox has released the first teaser trailer for The Predator. The film is the fourth entry in the Predator franchise and is set to hit theaters on September 14, 2018. From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black's explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe's most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race. Check out the teaser trailer below! The movie stars Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Jake Busey, and Yvonne Strahovski. Shane Black (Iron Man 3, The Nice Guys, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) serves as director and co-writer with Fred Dekker. Black is also best known as the writer behind Lethal Weapon. The original Predator was released back in 1987 and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as a US Army Major who finds himself being hunted by an extraterrestrial warrior in a South American jungle. Sequels titled Predator 2 and Predators followed in 1990 and 2010 respectively. Likewise, two cross-over films with the Alien franchise were also produced, Alien vs. Predator in 2004 and Alien vs. Predator: Requiem in 2007. Other upcoming films from 20th Century Fox include David Leitch's Deadpool 2 starring Ryan Reynolds Josh Brolin, and Zazie Beetz. Deadpool 2 is set to premiere on May 18, 2018. 10 Movies Based On Books You (Probably) Didn't Read[Teaser]Books have long served as the inspiration for movies. Some of the very first feature films were adaptations of great works of literature making them instant hits with audiences. Hollywood has routinely gone to the printed page to fill movie theaters ever since. Some adaptations are major cinematic events designed to sell movie tickets as well as tie-in copies of the novel. Other films fly under the radar with the relationship to their printed origins to the point that most fans are completely unaware they were based off a book or short story in the first place! Here are a few of our favorite flicks with literary counterparts you should consider reading - as well as watching.[/Teaser] John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) While most fans of Carpenter's tense potboiler of science fiction terror know it was a remake of Howard Hawks' The Thing From Another World, few know that both films were actually based off a short story called "Who Goes There" by science fiction author J.W. Campbell. While the Hawks film was a little looser in the adaptation, Carpenter and co-writer the late Bill Lancaster maintained a more faithful adaptation about a team of scientists who made a chilling discovery of extra-terrestrial life deep in Antarctica. Both are exceptional and creepy sci-fi films and worthy adaptations of this terrific short story. Buy The Blu-ray HERE Read The Short Story HERE Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) Similar to The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers has enjoyed multiple turns at movie theaters over the decades. And like The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers is based on a literary work and wasn't made up to cash in on the alien invasion craze of 1950s B-movies. Jack Finney's original novel has been adapted multiple times over the years, with each film taking various liberties. The most glaring difference between the novel and the various films - in particular, the exceptional 1978 version - is the tone of the ending. I won't give specifics, but Finney opted for a decidedly different outcome to his sci-fi yarn. Buy The Blu-ray HERE Read The Book HERE A History of Violence (2005) Director David Cronenberg is well known for making solid adaptations of great literary works, but for A History of Violence, he took on the exceptional graphic novel written by John Wagner with gritty artwork by Vince Locke. Cronenberg admittedly never read the graphic novel as he felt screenwriter Josh Olson's script was good enough (it was nominated for an Oscar). As great as the movie is, it differs wildly from the source - in particular, the latter half where Viggo Mortensen's Tom Stall confronts the demons from his past. Even with the differences, it's an excellent movie and a great read. Buy The Blu-ray HERE Pick Up The Graphic Novel HERE Apocalypse Now (1979) Some of the best adaptations take great liberties from their source material and instead focus on the theme and inner workings of the source. Francis Ford Coppola and John Milius transported Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" from the African Congo to the Vietnam conflict. Obviously, there are notable differences between the book and the film from time period, setting, and characters, but after reading the book, it's hard to deny that Apocalypse Now is an effective and brutal thematic adaptation of the story. Buy The Blu-ray HERE Read The Book HERE Jackie Brown (1997) Jackie Brown is undeniably a Quintin Tarantino film - however, most folks often overlook the fact that it is the only film to date that Tarantino didn't write an original screenplay for. Based on Elmore Leonard's exceptional novel "Rum Punch", Tarantino nailed the tone, dialogue, and the colorful criminal characters. This film is not only one of the best adaptations of an Elmore Leonard story but also one of Tarantino's best films. The storytelling stylings of Tarantino and Leonard were a match made in heaven. Buy The Blu-ray HERE Read The Book HERE Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1992) Most people know that Die Hard was an adaptation of Roderick Thorp's thrilling novel "Nothing Lasts Forever" which could have seen Frank Sinatra reprise his character from The Detective before Bruce Willis was cast and the story altered a tad. However, most fans don't know that Die Hard 2: Die Harder was also inspired by a novel - albeit from a completely different author. Walter Wager's "58 Minutes" was the perfect source material for a Die Hard sequel as it featured a hardened cynical New York cop waiting at the airport for his daughter to come home for Christmas from California when terrorists seize control. Swap some names, change the daughter to a wife and you can already see a dirty and bloody Bruce Willis running around an airport knocking off terrorists one by one. Buy The Blu-ray HERE Read The Book HERE Return of the Living Dead (1985) After his successful novelization of Night of the Living Dead original co-screenwriter, John Russo sought to create his own Living Dead universe with "Return of the Living Dead". Picking up shortly after the events of Night of the Living Dead, Return was originally intended to be a straight-forward horror sequel - that is until Dan O'Bannon came along and transformed it into a Horror-Comedy hybrid that has little to do with NOLD. While it may not be a faithful adaptation of the admittedly rough around the edges novel, Return of the Living Dead has become a celebrated cinematic classic. The original paperback is out of print and can be difficult to find, but you can check out Russo's original screenplay that he intended for the movie to be and see the differences for yourself. Buy The Blu-ray HERE Read The Original Screenplay HERE John Carpenter's Vampires (1998) John Carpenter went back to the literary well for his Action-Horror-Western Vampires. In this case, he took the basics of John Steakley's novel "Vampire$" of a Vatican sanctioned vampire hit-squad lead by the rough and tough Jack Crow. That's about all from the book that made it to the movie. While some plot points remain the same, Carpenter took the action of the novel and placed it in the American Southwest and made some drastic alterations to the film leaving little room for most of the events and characters of the source material. It's a fun flick and a good read, but they're very different animals. Buy The Blu-ray HERE Read The Book HERE The Howling (1981) Director Joe Dante and screenwriter John Sayles' The Howling is a classic werewolf movie about a reporter and her husband who travel to a secluded resort community so she can recover after being assaulted while covering a story. The original novel by author Gary Brandner is only vaguely similar. The plot setup, characters, main events differ - about the only thing from the movie that is in the novel is a secret community of werewolves no one knows about. In fact, as far as adaptations go, The Howling IV: The Original Nightmare is actually a far closer adaptation of the original Brandner novel than the first film. Buy The Blu-ray HERE Read The Book HERE First Blood (1982) When one first thinks of the character John Rambo, most people immediately think of series star and steward Sylvester Stallone. Rarely do people think of the film's original 1972 source novel by David Morrell that inspired it. That's largely because they are very different beasts. While many characters and events are the same, the book had a more nuanced focus where the film was more content to be a rampaging action movie with Rambo as a misunderstood anti-hero. The novel even saw Rambo dead, but Stallone was already thinking sequels and the book had a notably different ending that didn't leave room for any sequels - so some obvious changes were made. Worth noting, Morrell's involvement with the franchise didn't end with the first book, he actually stayed on to write the novelizations for Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III. Buy The Blu-ray HERE Read The Book HERE As long as novelists keep writing new material, Hollywood is sure to come knocking on their door with a suitcase of cash and a hope that sequels are in the works. Movie adaptations of obscure and popular literary works are a cornerstone of the film industry. The only thing we can do is sit back and hope the creative team in charge of the adaptation does right by our favorite novels. What about you - are there any obscure novels that were made into movies you think deserves to be on this list? Sound off in the comments!Posted Wed May 9, 2018 at 09:33 AM PDT by: -

Ron Howard Recaps 'Star Wars' in 'Arrested Development' Mash-Up Parody[teaser]"Now the story of a family that wants to rule the galaxy and the one son who had no choice but to save it."[/teaser] In anticipation for the upcoming premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Disney and Lucasfilm have released an amusing parody clip that recaps the plot of Star Wars: A New Hope in the style of Arrested Development -- complete with voice over narration by Solo director Ron Howard. The playful sketch features clips from Episode IV while Howard offers a snarky rundown of the film's story as his narrator persona from Arrested Development, trading in the dysfunctional Bluth family for the Skywalker clan and their equally complicated dynamics. A pitch-perfect mashup of both franchises, the video includes a few fun references to running jokes from Arrested Development, giving fans one more lesson on the importance of always leaving a note. Check out the clip below! In addition to narrator duties, Ron Howard also serves as the director of Solo: A Star Wars Story which is set to hit theaters on May 25. The film comes from a script written by Jon Kasdan & Lawrence Kasdan, and stars Alden Ehrenreich as a younger version of the iconic smuggler first made famous by Harrison Ford in the original trilogy. Additional cast members include Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Woody Harrelson, and Paul Bettany. Meanwhile, a fifth season of Arrested Development is expected to arrive on Netflix very soon. Likewise, a remixed version of the show's fourth season will premiere through the streaming service on May 4. The new edition has been recut from the original 15 individualized stories into 22 interwoven episodes with all of the Bluths in each installment as the plot plays out in chronological order, potentially offering a fresh perspective and new jokes. As he struggles to re-balance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he's confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside The Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from their past. Check out the official trailer below! 5 Things We "Hate" About The Marvel Cinematic Universe[Teaser]As much as we love the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we have to be honest and admit, there are a few things we hate. Okay, hate's a strong word (cough-clickbait-cough). We don't hate the MCU at all, but we did a 5 Things We Love article and we wanted to balance that out, and 5 Minor Quibbles with the MCU doesn't quite sound the same.[/Teaser] So, as Avengers Infinity War is set to dominate cinema screens this week, we thought it was appropriate to point out a few things we wish the MCU would do or could have done differently. Let us know in the comments below if there's anything you'd add to the list, or take off of ours. 5 Things We "Hate" About The Marvel Cinematic Universe 1: Weak Villains Aside from Loki, Ego, maybe Vulture, and with Thanos only-now making his true big bad galaxy dominating appearance - most of the MCU villains have been pretty weak sauce. Even Ultron, who had a film named after him, proved to be a relatively inconsequential villain. Baron Zemo, the guy who pits our heroes against each other in Captain America: Civil War - kind of a go-nowhere character at the end of the day. While Thanos has been teased as the big ultimate baddie of the universe, one can't help but wish there were higher stakes - how many bald corporate power-hungry ego-maniacs with access to high-tech weaponry are there in this cinematic universe? The MCU somehow even managed to make Hannibal actor Mads Mikkelsen a dead end villain for Doctor Strange - and that's something we "hate" to see! 2: Creative Differences While the MCU can be credited for letting great talent play with their toys, there have been some notable and unfortunate exceptions. Perhaps the most famous was the sad and unceremonious exit of Edgar Wright from Ant-Man. While Peyton Reed did a fine job and his followup Ant-Man and the Wasp looks to be another hit, one can't help wonder how different Ant-Man could have been with Wright in the chair. Toss in Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkin's exit from Thor: The Dark World due to creative differences and you can't help but wonder about the possibly great films that we missed out on. Granted, we don't know the full scale and scope that lead to these high-profile exits, so hopefully, they're isolated incidents. 3: Lack Of Solo Movies For Side Characters Why hasn't there been a female fronted solo film for Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow? Let alone Renner's Hawkeye? There are a lot of great characters out there who seem to be constantly stuck playing the second fiddle when in their own comic book lore they are forces to be reckoned with. Granted, new heroes we haven't seen yet are exciting, but in all the noise of sequels and new heroes, some great characters who can hold their own weight and franchises are getting lost. I'd be 100% on board of a Haley Atwell fronted 50s/60s themed Agent Carter film and I'm sure there are a number of fans who would love to see that as well given the abrupt and unfortunate cancelation of the television series. These don't need to be $100million+ epics. Modest budget and room to play could make for a little extra fun for fans with a respectable return on investment for the studio. 4: Fractured Marvel Universes This infographic from TheGeekTwins.com perfectly spells out the rights mess that is Marvel. When you think of Marvel movies, you forget that multiple studios own or have licensed so many different characters. Sony has Spider-Man and Venom. Fox has X-Men, distribution rights for Fantastic Four, and various other side characters. Universal has Incredible Hulk. And Disney-Marvel own everything else that we know and love as the proper MCU. Fingers crossed for the upcoming Fox/Disney deal that the X-Men and our favorite first family of superheroes can join the MCU. It's taken years to get this close and the deal could still fall apart scattering our heroes to the four winds. The last thing we need or want to ever see happen again is two different versions of Quicksilver in two movies in the same year. Woof. 5: Genre Fatigue Sure, Black Panther set box office records left and right, Infinity War is already blowing pre-sale records and the MCU shows no signs of slowing down, but at what point does this whale of a franchise go belly up and drown? While fans (myself included) long for more of our favorite heroes to get some solid screen time, it'd be a lie not to admit that we may be getting too much of a good thing. As Marvel proper aims to release 2-3 movies a year, there's also the issue of competition from Warners' DCEU as well as other projects like the long in development Spawn reboot on top of all the seemingly never-ending barrage of television series. That is a lot of comic book overload! While Marvel does seem to be very judicious with their planning - one does have to worry about genre burnout especially as the bottom of the barrel characters become the only options left. ~~~ While we've been big fans of Marvel's output, we have to admit that it's been a bit of a rocky road. For every great decision, there's been Mickey Roarke talking to a parrot. No franchise is ever flawless and Marvel has had its fair share of ups and downs, we hope that they've learned from their past mistakes and can make up for some of these grievances with the future films already in the development pipeline. 5 Things We LOVE About The Marvel Cinematic Universe[Teaser]As Avengers: Infinity War looms over cinema screens this week, we thought it was time to take a step back and appreciate all of the things we love about the Marvel Cinematic Universe.[/Teaser] It's been a wild ride to get to this point, but we've seen a lot of great and exciting flicks hit movie theaters over the last ten years. Sure there may be a few things we "hate" and would love to see fixed in the MCU, but there is a lot we love about and look forward to seeing. 5 Things We LOVE About The Marvel Cinematic Universe 1: Universe Building This was the first time anything like this had been attempted. Sure, there have been other great comic book movies in the past, Superman: The Movie, Batman, Spider-Man 2, but none of them tried to be part of a cohesive universe. Sure, the idea of The Avengers may have started out as a goof at the end of Iron Man with a teaser appearance of Sam Jackson's Nick Fury or Downey's appearance as Tony Stark at the end of The Incredible Hulk. But, it planted a little seed that grew into one hell of a mighty oak! 18 films later and $14 billion in the global box office, this franchise shows no signs of slowing down as each new release becomes a major cinematic event not to be missed. 2: Talented Filmmakers If there's one thing that can be credited to Kevin Feige and his team at Disney/Marvel, they know how to get strong filmmakers and storytellers in the right positions. Who would have thought the Russo Brothers - the men behind Community and Arrested Development among other comedies - would manage to create two terrific Captain America movies and are aiming to one-up everyone with The Avengers: Infinity War? Toss in filmmakers like James Gunn with Guardians of the Galaxy and most recently Ryan Coogler with his fantastic Black Panther, and you can see why Marvel has done well by putting an enormous amount of trust in their creative partners to deliver great flicks people line up in anticipation for. 3: Casting If there's one thing Marvel has done right is getting the right people to slip into the colorful costumes. Robert Downey Jr. easily makes us forget that at one time Tom Cruise was in line to play Tony Stark/Iron Man! Chris Evans is Captain America. Toss in terrific terns from cast members like Scarlett Johansson, Chadwick Boseman, Jeremy Renner, Tom Holland, the entire Guardians of the Galaxy cast, and it's hard to imagine any other actors taking on these iconic characters making the prospect of recasting when contracts expire less likely and even less appealing to the legion of fans who have fervently devoured these films over the years. 4: Story Approach One has to tip their hat to Marvel for at least trying to make their films a little different from one another. Sure some elements remain the same, but each feels like they get their own genre to play around in. The Captain America movies got to plunge into Political Espionage. Ant-Man was a heist movie. Doctor Strange got to be a sorcery-styled sci-fi fantasy, while Guardians of the Galaxy got to play around as a pseudo Space Opera similar to the classic Star Wars movies. Sure some of these films can feel a tad routine at times, the fact that the MCU is willing to play around with the approach to their genre helps make these movies feel unique and fun. 5: Adapting Popular Storylines Civil War, Winter Soldier, Infinity War, Ragnarok, Planet Hulk - if there is one thing Marvel is doing right it's going to their well of popular storylines to adapt. While we hate that their fractured franchise meant that the X-Men couldn't be a part of the Civil War movie, we appreciate the simple fact they at least pull from these classic stories to pull inspiration for their cinematic offerings. For the last decade they've smartly built their franchise towards the defining moment of Avengers: Infinity War and its to-be-titled sequel as all of our favorite heroes face off against the biggest baddy of all - Thanos. While it looks like a number of stories will come to a close, we're going to lose some of our favorite heroes in this war, there is still a number of great stories and characters for the MCU to explore for years to come. ~~~ One has to give Marvel a lot of credit for carefully crafting their Cinematic Universe. They may have had a few bumps, there may be a couple things we "hate" about it -- don't miss this article's companion piece, 5 Things We "Hate" About the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- but overall we have to admit that this decade-long journey has been a hell of a thrill ride. Think about that first cameo appearance of Nick Fury at the end of Iron Man. We all dreamed of the cinematic possibilities of what it could bring, but did we ever really believe that Marvel would commit to a multi-year multi-film franchise of this scale? Even this optimistic writer never thought it would get to this point let alone a sprawling cinematic universe where even the most obscure characters are given the chance to shine. Here's hoping the next ten years are this good - and hopefully better! What do you think dear readers? Did we miss anything you loved about this Cinematic Universe?
