'Wings (1927)' Blu-ray Announced[teaser]The first recipient of the Academy's Best Picture is getting the high-definition treatment next year! [/teaser] In an early announcement to retailers, Paramount is readying 'Wings (1927)' for Blu-ray on January 24. William A. Wellman's war classic stars Clara Bow, Charles 'Buddy' Rogers and Richard Arlen also picked up an Oscar for Best Effects/Engineering Effects). The film has been restored using advanced digital techniques and a damaged duplicate negative from the Paramount archives (the original print is lost) and the original paper score was procured from the Library of Congress and rerecorded by a full orchestra. The Blu-ray will feature 1080p video, 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio (with the newly-restored musical score by J.S. Zamecnik) as well as 2.0 Dolby Digital (with organ score by Garlord Carter) and all supplements will be new including: Wings: Grandeur in the Sky, Restoring the Power and Beauty of Wings, and Dogfight! The release will be a 2-disc set and will have 1080i video, an uncompressed 2.0 soundtrack, and the only supplement will be a photo gallery on Blood on the Saddle. [/teaser] In an early announcement to retailers, Lionsgate is working on 'The English Patient,' 'Frida,' and 'The Piano' for Blu-ray on January 31. 'The English Patient' was nominated for thirteen Oscars and won nine including Best Cinematography, Best Director (Anthony Minghella) and Best Picture. 'Frida' was nominated for six Academy Awards and won for Best Makeup and Best Music/Original Score. 'The Piano' was nominated for eight Oscars including Best Picture and won for Best Actress (Holly Hunter), Best Supporting Actress (Anna Paquin) and Best Writing/Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (Jane Campion). Best Buy is Giving Out a Free Blu-ray Player with Purchase of Samsung Epic 4G Touch[teaser]Not a bad way to get an extra player without having to shell out for it. [/teaser] Best Buy is offering up a nice deal for folks that are picking up the new Samsung Epic 4G Touch. With the purchase of the phone and a two year contract, you'll get a free Samsung Blu-ray player. It's not a top-of-the line player and it retails for $89 normally, but it's not bad by any means - especially for free. The free BD-D5100 was released back in 2008 so it doesn't have features like Wi-Fi, but it does include Netflix and Pandora streaming for those willing to plug in.
