Samsung Predicts 4K Blu-ray for 2014[teaser]Samsung Australia's Vice President for Consumer Electronics believes 4K Blu-ray discs will arrive this year. [/teaser] According to a report in The Australian, 4K Blu-ray discs may be on the way later this year. Rumors of an announcement from the BDA have been swirling for months, but so far no official details have emerged. While several streaming and downloadable 4K media options have been revealed at CES, word about a true Ultra HD disc medium has remained elusive, but we may now be getting our first indications that movement on that front is indeed underway. Speaking with The Australian, Samsung Australia's Vice President for Consumer Electronics Philip Newton shared his belief that a 4K disc medium will arrive "by the end of the year." All of the technology for three and four-layer 100-125GB disc production is ready, but companies are simply waiting for manufacturers and the BDA to finalize the standards for the medium. Current topics of contention apparently include which codec will be used for the new format, with H.265 and Google's VP9 both being among the options. Until the standard is finalized, streaming options like Netflix and proprietary HDD download services like Sony's Video Unlimited 4K will remain the main sources of Ultra HD content.
