From a post-apocalyptic TV series event, a feel good baseball movie, a solid high school movie, Sir Sean Connery as Drago, the original Magnificent Seven and more, this week has a lot of quality releases to consider. And that's just a summary of 4K titles.
Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 38 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of Febrary 19th - February 25th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.
Compared to the past couple of weeks, this week is huge. The single new movie release this week is a feel-good baseball movie titled Running the Bases. Unless I am mistaken, this is Mill Creek's first 4K release.
TV on disc new release is from Paramount with Station Eleven, described as a 'post apocalyptic saga.'
On to catalog titles, Criterion Collection has got Dazed and Confused. Bryan's review is putting this as a "Must Own" release.
Shout Factory has Dragonheart and Shout Select has the (original) 1960 release of The Magnificent Seven.
Sticking with the same production house, Scream Factory is offering up The Slumber Party Massacre (1982) / Slumber Party Massacre II in one package.
A pair of recommended releases (if you like that genre) from Blue Underground with Eugenie (Philosophy in the Boudoir) and Marquis de Sade's Justine.
From Sony Pictures, The Remains of the Day with Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson.
Circling back to Paramount, a double-dip in a sense, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit gets a standalone release outside of the five film collection.
Next week is a pretty big week too with two more Laika 4K releases (SteelBook and standard), Devotion, Puss in Boots, Rocky 1-4, Training Day and more!
Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases above, Station Eleven and Running the Bases each get their respective releases.
From Searchlight Pictures, the 2022 drama/romance Empire of Light.
From Sony Pictures Classics, foreign romance/war film Indochine and Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams. From their standard label, 1962's comedy/musical Ring-a-ding Rhythm.
LionsGate's films of the week are The Inspection, The Price We Pay and The Old Way. The latter is a Western with Nicolas Cage. If you were hoping for Bruce Willis, that is coming next week with Detective Knight: Independence.
Anime highlights include Clannad / Clannad After Story - Complete Collection, Giovanni's Island and Love After World Domination: The Complete Season.
How about a little martial arts action with Magnificent Warriors from Arrow Video?
Mill Creek has a trio of collections worth looking at, Epic Showdowns - 4 Action Movies, Sci-Fi from the Vault: 4 Classic Films and Thrillers from the Vault: 8 Classic Horror Films.
Honorable mention: If you are looking to complete a Steve McQueen collection, this week Kino Lorber has got The Hunter available to purchase.
Criterion Collection's May releases have been announced. You can thank me for them adding Wings of Desire to the 4K slate, I literally just bought the UK Import. Thelma & Louise is a nice bonus too, check it out!
Universal has officially announced M3GAN will include the unrated cut, with a March 21 release date. And nope, no 4K disc. I suspect you can thank Blumhouse for that one, we have seen them produce films for Sony as well without 4K physical. Maybe in the future.
If you thought you were going to collect them all and not hurt your wallet too badly, think again. It looks like the entire Disney animated film catalog is coming to Walmart/DMC exclusive blu-ray and/or Best Buy 4K SteelBooks. Additional titles include The Aristocats, The Jungle Book, Zootopia, Tangled, Frozen II, Sleeping Beauty, Lady and The Tramp, Wreck-It Ralph, Robin Hood and 101 Dalmatians on 2/28, Finding Nemo, Coco, Brave, Cars, Up, The Incredibles and Monsters, Inc. on June 13, Mickey & Friends 10 Classic Shorts – Volume 2 on June 27, Iron Man SteelBook on September 5, The Lion King, Aladdin, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Fox and the Hound, Cinderella, Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs and Alice In Wonderland on October 17th. It was previously noted that Cinderella will be getting a 4K release on March 28th via the Disney Movie Club. This one is probably like Strange World was released.
Sandpiper Films is bringing 3 more Twilight Time releases back in print, they are Bulletproof Monk, The Quiet American (1958) and Year of the Comet. Look for these on April 18th.
Which titles are you buying this week? Which ones are on your wishlist, be it to buy as an impulse buy or to wait for the right price?
