Samsung's 2012 Blu-ray Player Lineup Includes One Compact and One Sporting HDMI Inputs

As you might expect, they also come packed with UltraViolet Disc to Digital for DVDs.

Samsung has more than a few Blu-ray players coming out in 2012 but they're highlighting two in particular as their flagship products. The first is a player with a surprisingly compact form-factor and the other can operate as a makeshift receiver.

Samsung's new BD-ES6000 changes things up significantly in terms of size. Samsung says that their new compact player is only slightly larger than a Blu-ray disc. It looks more like a Blu-ray drive for a computer than a player, but Samsung says you can still expect the kind of high-quality playback for both 2D and 3D discs as its bigger brothers.

The BD-E6500 goes in the other direction. Instead of the minimalist approach taken with the ES6000, Samsung has added a new function to the Blu-ray player. The E6500 gives you a pair of HDMI inputs on the back of the player that you can attach other components to, just like you would a receiver.

All of Samsung's players have at least one thing in common - a new video processor that can upconvert DVDs and low-resolution streaming video to 1080p. They also support Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD bitstream outputs.

Samsung's new players also give you the ability to register DVDs with UltraViolet and then access digital versions of those movies any time you want on any registered device. You can then pay to upgrade that copy to HD if you like.

Samsung's New Home Theater Systems Offer 2D to 3D Conversion and Tube Amplifiers

You'll also find built-in Wi-Fi and access to Samsung Apps.

Samsung has been making some changes to its home theater systems in the last few years and this year's models are certainly taking things up-market a bit.

The company's new home theater systems - the 7.1 channel E6730W and 5.1 channel E5500W - include more than just the traditional receiver and speaker combination. For starters, they pack a Blu-ray player that does 2D to 3D conversion so you can enjoy your existing Blu-rays with a bit of extra pop.

More interesting though is the addition of tube amplifiers to the higher end E6730W. The system combines "The crystal clear sound quality from a digital amplifier with the warmer tone qualities of vacuum tubes." The tubes are visible from the front and top of the system too, giving you a piece of hardware that's bound to impress some folks.

Samsung Drops Price on 3D Glasses - Includes More With TVs

Samsung hopes that cheaper entry into active 3D will get more people excited about the new tech.

One of the biggest problems associated with active 3D televisions is the cost of the glasses. When sets first launched, glasses were priced at between $100 and $200, which meant that for a family of four, you could be looking at an $800 investment for 3D, depending on how many pairs your TV came with.

Samsung is making things a lot easier starting in late April when they bring the price of extra glasses down to $50 a pair. It's not the same price point as passive glasses, but it's a massive step in the right direction.

In addition to lowering the price, Samsung is going to be packing in two pairs of glasses with all of its 2011 3D capable televisions. It seems like a very smart move for the company.

Samsung Pleads Guilty in Price Fixing Case

The company was fined a whopping $32 million.

Samsung is the first company to be officially fined in the price fixing scandal that took place between 1997 and 2006. Samsung SDI agreed to plead guilty to the charges and pay the significant penalty.

In addition to Samsung - the first company to be found guilty - six individuals have been indicted for price fixing. Another 22 executives and eight companies have been charged and the investigation is still happening.

The US Justice Department's statement on the matter is pretty straightforward. "Samsung SDI and co-conspirators exchanged CDT sales, production, market share and pricing information for the purpose of monitoring and enforcing adherence to their agreements."

Samsung Players Aren't Working With Warner and Universal Films

The newest firmware update caused some problems, but a rollback seems to work.

There's been quite the interesting development with the latest firmware update from Samsung. Certain players – the 2009 line specifically – got an update recently that's stopped playback of films from Warner Bros and Universal Studios films.

The problem, it's suspected, stems from a digital rights management (DRM) issue. It seems to be happening with newer movies like 'Book of Eli' and 'Sherlock Holmes,' but not with some older releases.

The best solution at the moment is to download the older firmware for your player and manually switch over. If you haven't updated yet, it seems waiting would be your best bet.

Samsung Releases the First 3D Capable Portable Blu-ray Player

The player is 3D capable, but the screen isn't. You'll need to plug it in if you want to enter the third dimension.

While portable DVD players once came in all shapes and sizes, portable Blu-ray players just haven't taken off in the same way. There are only a few models out, and none of them really satisfy. Samsung's BD-C8000 might just change that.

The new portable player features a 10.3 inch screen, which is quite large for a portable player. It handles Samsung Apps, gives you access to videos from Blockbuster and YouTube and even streams from your PC.

Before you go getting to excited about the whole 3D thing, let's clarify. The Samsung BD-C8000 can play back 3D movies on a 3D capable screen. The screen on the BD-C8000 isn't 3D capable. That means you'll have to plug the player into a 3D television to go 3D.

Still, for what it is, the BD-C8000 is impressive, slick looking and packed with features – though Samsung has not disclosed the screen resolution. It's also just $449.

Samsung Launches a 50" 3D Plasma for Under $1,000

Thu Aug 12, 2010 at 02:00 PM ET
Tags: Samsung, Plasma, 3D (all tags)

The PN50C490 comes in at $989, making it the cheapest new 3D set.

Remember back when 3D television was first being brought to market? There was a giant to-do about the price premium you might have to pay for the privilege of owning a 3D set. Samsung just shut that argument down.

Samsung's new 50 inch plasma has an MSRP of $1,099 but is available right now on Amazon for just $989. You're not going find another new 3D television at that price, especially one that large.

The downside is that you're looking at a 720p set. Depending on who you ask, the change in resolution from 720p to 1080p doesn't really matter when you're watching 3D. For two dimensional pictures though, it's pretty noticeable at the size.

If you're looking for 1080p, Samsung's new PNC50C680 comes in at around $1,500, while the 58 inch PN58C680 sells for $2,300.

There's no official date on these sets yet, but Samsung says to expect a release sometime later this month.

3-D Glasses Incompatible? Wear Them Upside Down!

Thu May 06, 2010 at 12:00 PM ET
Tags: 3D, Industry Trends, High-Def Retailing, Samsung, Panasonic (all tags)

Samsung and Panasonic's 3-D glasses are compatible after all, but there's a catch.

That's right, the big 3-D glasses incompatibility problem has been solved. Well, in the case of Samsung and Panasonic anyway. The fix isn't the most elegant, and it'll make you look even sillier than you already did with the glasses on.

It's simple though, you've got to give it that. If you're using Samsung glasses on a Panasonic set, or vice versa, simply wear them upside down.

The interesting thing is that the manufacturers weren't taken by surprise on this one. Samsung R&D chief Simon Lee confirmed it, but said that it won't be necessary for long. "I think that it's likely," said Lee, "that the different manufacturers will come together, possibly as early as next year, to agree on a common standard for Active Shutter glasses"
