Every Little Disc, Gonna Be Alright - 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, May 27, 2024The heat is on! Ouch, just, OUCH! There are a ton of releases in both the 4K and blu-ray categories. In what feels like a repeat of last month starting off slow then ramping up as the month continues, there are plenty of titles to pick from this week! Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 52 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of May 26th - June 1st, as well as a look at announcements from last week. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases- Getting right down to business, Domestic New Releases begins with Bob Marley: One Love, which is also available as a SteelBook Edition. Respect, yeah. In the zero-day notice category (yup, if you guessed Universal Pictures you would be right) we see the return of the Furious Five with Kung Fu Panda 4. Catalog titles are next, from Kino Lorber we get the comedy/musical Cry Baby with Johnny Depp. Severin Films is up next. The Great Alligator get a standard release as well as a Web Exclusive Edition, Cathy's Curse gets a standard release and an uber fancy Web Exclusive Edition, Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker as a standard edition and a Web Exclusive Edition, The Devil's Honey as a standard edition and a Web Exclusive Edition and Cemetery Man gets a standard release. From Discotek, Japanese language release of Belladonna of Sadness. The A24 shop has a site exclusive release of (Talking Heads) concert film Stop Making Sense: Collector's Edition. Vinegar Syndrome site exclusives of Invasion U.S.A., Lifeline and Navy Seals are out this week, general releases usually follow in a month or two. A standard release of Witch Story is also available this week. Closing it out, Paramount has a double-dip of sort, a SteelBook release of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Warner Bros has Batman (1989) as a SteelBook release too! More of the same pattern begins next week, as the month begins we get a handful or releases, then it ramps up as the month goes on. Blu-ray releases- Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases includes Bob Marley: One Love from Paramount, Kung Fu Panda 4 (and a 4-Movie Collection) from Universal, Cry Baby from Kino Lorber, The Great Alligator, "Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker" and Cemetery Man (Standard Edition) from Severin and Stop Making Sense from the A24 shop. Yes, it was announced last week. Seems to me if a studio were to give more advance notice it would offer a chance to build up excitement and a preorder window. Nope, let's ship the movie to retailers and as they are scratching their heads on a release date, then announce it 3 hours later. Halo: Season 2 will be coming to blu-ray and 4K on July 23rd. Just like Season 1, there will also be a 4K SteelBook option. Warner Bros has officially announced Rocky V, Rocky Balboa and the Ultimate Knockout Collection for July 16th release. Sony has made Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire official for June 25th. 4K Release Calendar 2K/BD Release Calendar Which titles are you buying this week? Do the Hustle! - HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, May 20, 2024Not pressing pause by a long shot. Both 4K and blu-ray categories have a lot of decent titles to ponder. Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 51 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of May 19th - May 25th, as well as a look at announcements from last week. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases- This category looks pretty crowded at first glance. Even if you were to purchase everything on the list, you would come out well under $250, not the $600 mountain that it looks like. Import Monday has the 2011 Sci-Fi Thriller Source Code via StudioCanal. As LionsGate did this already in the US, most of us have little reason to even consider it. Domestic Tuesday consists of all catalog titles. Before I get the the mini-flood from Paramount, let's post all the others. First up, from Sony Pictures and the first time to 4K disc, comedy American Hustle gets a SteelBook release. From Blue Underground and what is sure to be another definitive release, horror/thriller Deathdream (aka Dead of Night). From Scream Factory, 2020 fantasy/horror Gretel & Hansel, previously released in regular HD by Universal. Closing out the category before we hit up Paramount, Arrow Video has a pair of titles. First up, a 4K upgrade to Guillermo del Toro's goth/horror Crimson Peak. There is word that del Toro is revisiting this film for some future project, don't let that stop you from buying it, these Arrow LE's sell fast and increase in value. And last but not least, crime film Narc. Our most recent review lists it as a "Must Own." Owning it, I must! OK, those Paramount releases. Dubbed All 4 Formats Editions, they include a DVD, Blu-ray, 4K disc and Digital Codes, housed in a DVD case, all for a value price of $10.99! These have crept up at many local Walmarts for some time now and are now made available elsewhere. Preorders sold well, so just keep checking, or visit your Walmart for mixed results. This batch includes Beverly Hills Cop, Cloverfield, Escape from L.A., The Hunt for Red October, Interstellar, The Lost City, A Quiet Place, Shutter Island and The Untouchables. Next week we see a significant ramp up for general titles. Prepare Yourself. Blu-ray releases- Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases include Deathdream from Blue Underground and Narc from Arrow Video. I wouldn't be wrong by saying that the 9 titles from Paramount are also counterparts, but let's just move on to the rest of the category. Sony Pictures releases the 2016 drama/fantasy The Cleanse. Under the Sony Pictures Classics label, drama film The Vertical Ray of the Sun. New (2024) release crime film Dead Wrong comes via Mill Creek. Somewhat busy week for Anime highlights, look for Dead Mount Death Play - Part 1, Dr. STONE - Season 3 Part 1, Food Wars!: The Second Plate, A Galaxy Next Door: The Complete Season, The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World - The Complete Season and Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement - The Complete Season. Shout Factory has a Collector's Edition of The Island Of Dr. Moreau (1996). Criterion Collection's special interest title this week is Three Revolutionary Films by Ousmane Sembène. Honorable Mentions: If you have been collecting the Kino Cult Releases, this week they have Kino Cult #7, Bettie Page Double Feature [Varietease | Teaserama]. Time to scoop it up! Kino also has a pair of collections of classic films to consider this week as well, Philo Vance Collection and Republic Pictures Horror Collection. The Sci-Fi Chillers Collection got bumped to next week. Notable announcements from last week: Orson Welles' iconic thriller The Lady from Shanghai will be coming to 4K disc on July 23rd from Sony Pictures. Sony Pictures will also be releasing The Three Stooges Blu-ray Collection on July 23rd as well. The 20-disc set includes 8 full length features, as well as 120 Stooge shorts. Criterion Collection's August batch of titles has been announced. Do have a look see. 4K Release Calendar 2K/BD Release Calendar Which titles are you buying this week? Let's Get Spicy - HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, May 13, 2024The Summer movie season is just around the corner which means blockbusters and new releases. For the disc market, we are ramping up again to what will be a busy end of month schedule, for this week though, a few more titles than last. Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 50 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of May 12th - May 18th, as well as a look at announcements from last week. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases- The week begins with Import Monday and the erotic drama/romance The Dreamers. And from Warner Bros, another deluxe release, American Sniper 10th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray SteelBook [UK Import]. On to Domestic Release Tuesday and starting with Warner Bros, and no doubt a title most of us have been anxiously awaiting, Dune: Part Two. You can also get this in a SteelBook Release, and the obligatory Two-film Collection release. Warner Bros also leads the catalog releases section as well. First, award winning American Sniper, directed by Clint Eastwood. This one also has a Steelbook option available. Standard Warner Bros M.O here, the UK gets a much nicer release, seen above in the import Monday section, the US gets a standard release. On a plus note, they did not use an alternate cover art for these release and they actually did put more than one special feature on the disc this time. A bit of comedy goes a long way too with Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike, popcorn tub not included. And then, lastly from Warner Bros, 12 Strong, a film based on a true story of a post 9/11 U.S. Special Forces team. Paramount Presents Spine Number 44 becomes available this week, referring to Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West, starring several familiar names like Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda. The Criterion Collection this week has the 1960 mystery/thriller Peeping Tom. Closing out the 4K category, Shout! Factory has Killer Klowns from Outer Space, which can also be had in a snazzy SteelBook. Next week looks like a bear, but a lot of them are those "All 4 formats edition" releases that have been on the shelves of your local Walmart on and off for awhile, and seem unavailable to order now via Amazon. Blu-ray releases- Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases include Dune: Part Two, Dune: 2-Film Collection and Peeping Tom. New release from LionsGate - Imaginary. On my maybe list, but would be on a for sure list if it was a 4K. Someone tell Blumhouse there is a hungry market for 4K discs. In the zero notice category, Universal Pictures also brings us a new release comedy/fantasy titled The American Society of Magical Negroes. The Warner Archive Collection has a few more treats for us this week with Friendly Persuasion, The Nun's Story and You're a Big Boy Now. LionsGate delivers a pair of previously released Vestron Video titles, but as Walmart Exclusive SteelBooks, look for The Gate and The Lair of the White Worm. Anime highlights include The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague - The Complete Season, KonoSuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World! - The Complete Season, Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear Punch - Season 2, Naruto Shippuden Set 3, A Place Further Than The Universe: The Complete Series [Collector's Edition] and Uzaki-Chan Wants to Hang Out! The Complete Season 2, which can also be purchased as a Limited Edition Release. Shout! Factory releases Wes Craven's Dracula 2000 this week. Also the 2009 thriller Orphan gets a Collector's Edition. Notable announcements from last week: Warner Bros has detailed the release for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire to 4K and blu-ray disc, with a street date of June 11th. Not an announcement, but rather news. We just want to mention the passing of B-movie great Roger Corman at the grand age of 98. There would have been a lot of ideas never made in to movies if it were not for his vision. 4K Release Calendar 2K/BD Release Calendar Which titles are you buying this week? It's All For You! 'The First Omen' Terrorizes Digital May 28th & Blu-ray on July 30thIn an era where legacy horror and science fiction franchises are continued and retooled for the streaming market, it's nice to see one of these come to theaters - and it's actually good! With little marketing, The First Omen proved successful and will soon terrorize digital retailers, Hulu, and eventually Blu-ray Like Prey, The First Omen was originally slated to be a direct-to-streaming Hulu venture. But Disney wisened up and realized these films could actually make money in theaters - especially when they're actually pretty damn good! While it wasn't a massive box-office draw, it wasn't a complete failure pulling in a healthy $ 50 million (and counting) globally. Which, to me, is impressive since I didn't know the movie was even coming to theaters until three weeks before its opening. I have to wonder if it hadn't released so close to a very similar Nunsplitation flick like Immaculate if its box office prospects wouldn't have been better. Regardless, I found this to be a surprisingly effective franchise prequel with some genuinely shocking imagery. Now writer/director Arkasha Stevenson's The First Omen will begin its digital sales journey on May 28th, start streaming on Hulu on May 30th, and drop on Blu-ray and DVD on July 30th. No word on a 4K yet - but we hope one is in the works! The First Omen - Blu-ray Film SynopsisIn this psychological horror prequel to the classic Omen films, a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church. Soon, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her faith, and that reveals a terrifying conspiracy to bring about the birth of evil incarnate. The First Omen stars Nell Tiger Free (Servant), Tawfeek Barhom (Mary Magdalene), Sonia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman), Ralph Ineson (The Northman) and Bill Nighy (Living). The film is directed by Arkasha Stevenson based on characters created by David Seltzer (The Omen), with a story by Ben Jacoby (Bleed) and a screenplay by Tim Smith & Arkasha Stevenson and Keith Thomas (Firestarter).Bonus Features The Mystery of Margaret – Join director Arkasha Stevenson and stars Nell Tiger Free, Bill Nighy and Maria Caballero as they dive into the character of Margaret, her relationships with other characters, and how she’s manipulated while trying to solve the film’s horrifying mystery. The Director’s Vision – Director Arkasha Stevenson talks about her love of horror films, the opportunity to expand on The Omen legacy, and crafting The First Omen entirely through a female lens. She also describes shooting in Rome, and the cast recounts working with Arkasha. Signs of The First Omen – Join the director and talented artists as they reveal some of the symbolism within the set designs and the costumes. Learn how the use of practical effects blurs the line between what is real and what is not in The First Omen’s terrifying world. Paramount Scares & Fangoria Kick Off Scream Greats Series with 'The Crow' Back in Theaters May 29th-30thEver wish you could go back and catch your favorite flicks back in the theater in all their glory? Having a great home theater setup is fun and all, but there's something special about going to the theater and scarfing down overpriced popcorn to an old favorite. Paramount Scares is bringing some of our favorite flicks back to theaters. After a series of well-performing re-releases like Disney with Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom Menace, Sony bringing back all eight Spider-Man films, and Universal celebrating The Mummy's 25th, it's Paramount's turn to get into the mix. Teaming with Fangoria, the "Scream Greats" series starts of May 29th and 30th with Alex Proyas' The Crow starring the late Brandon Lee. Sure, we literally just got a 4K disc of the film this week, but how cool is it going to be to see it back up on the big screen? After The Crow we have the following fan favorites to look forward to: FRIDAY THE 13TH PART IV: THE FINAL CHAPTER 40th Anniversary - September 8 & September 10 SLEEPY HOLLOW - October 13 & October 16 ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES - November 10 & November 13 Given how many great horror flicks reside in Paramount's archive this isn't the most aggressive slate of rereleases ever - but it's a fun one. Addams Family Values is especially well-timed! Now the fun speculative side of this development is that since we have 4K discs for The Crow and Sleepy Hollow could this mean 4K discs of Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter and Addams Family Values are coming our way? While I can't wait to see both again on the big screen (along with The Crow and Sleepy Hollow) I'd love to add both to the ever-growing 4K UHD Collection. But since Paramount has yet to do 4K discs of Friday the 13th Part 2 and Part 3 - we can only speculate there. Tickets for The Crow are on sale now - CLICK HERE for showtime details - See you at the moviePosted Wed May 8, 2024 at 11:13 AM PDT by: -
Is That a 4K I Smell? HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, May 6, 2024Lately, the release schedule for each month looks like a pattern, just a few titles on the beginning of the month, a linear curve throughout, and then a flood at the end. If you're ready, we are at the beginning and have just a few to pick from. Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 49 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of May 5th - May 11th, as well as a look at announcements from last week. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases- Import Monday begins with Night Swim, with yet another familiar pattern. Release a blu-ray in the US, then a 4K overseas, and then (possibly) a 4K in the US after that. Domestic Tuesday this week has zero New Releases. With all the catalog title possibilities out there, this is A-OK, bring them! Starting the week, cult classic The Crow with Brandon Lee. You can also choose the SteelBook if you so desire. From Shout Factory, animated double-feature The Addams Family 1 & 2. How about an Oscar winning Western from Kino Lorber, High Noon? In the "you're welcome" category (because I recently bought the import), LionsGate brings us Francis Ford Coppola's One From The Heart: Reprise. Had I not bought it, you would all still be waiting for it. What other import purchases would you like me to make? In the 'maybe' release listing, Frivolous Lola. Has been pushed back a couple of times, now listed as May 3rd on Amazon. The next 3rd of the month Tuesday is in August. A pair of music concert releases come out on Friday, Peter Gabriel: Back to Front - Live in London - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Queen Rock Montreal + Live Aid - 4K Ultra Blu-ray Blu-ray releases- Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases include just High Noon from Kino Lorber and (maybe) Frivolous Lola from Cult Epics. There is also a Friday release of Queen Rock Montreal + Live Aid from Mercury. Warner Archive Collection releases this week include Devil's Doorway, The Mask of Fu Manchu, The Rain People and Scooby-Doo On Zombie Island / Return to Zombie Island. Delayed several times, and finally here, Hardware Wars: Collector's Edition comes to us via the MVD Rewind Collection. And, just because, let's also pick up Joysticks and Sabotage while we are at it. If you follow MVD on Facebook, they are very transparent about the whys for street date changes, which is very admirable. Arrow Video has the crime/thriller Night Falls on Manhattan for us this week. Criterion Collection this week has A Story of Floating Weeds / Floating Weeds: Two Films by Yasujiro Ozu. Anime highlights include KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World - The Complete Season, Mob Psycho 100 III - Season 3, also available as a Limited Edition, One Piece - Collection 34 and One Piece: Season Thirteen - Voyage Seven. Monk: Season Six comes to us this week via Kino Lorber. Honorable Mention: Mill Creek has a double feature for us, Director Spotlight: Sydney Pollack, which includes OOP title Bobby Deerfield and the previously unreleased blu-ray of Castle Keep. Closing out the week, a couple of Austrailian imports this Friday via Amazon US: Clint Eastwood: Film Collection (AU Import) Scent of a Woman (AU Import) May December (AU Import) Road House (AU Import) Notable announcements from last week: Shout Factory has revealed their July title slate. For 4K releases, Dark Angel, House of Gucci, Phantoms and UHF. For blu-ray, Ali G Indahouse: The Movie, Storytelling and Who's That Girl. Getting that SteelBook double-dip, Evangelion: 3.0+1.11 Thrice Upon a Time (yeah I know, why not the 4K), and 4K general SteelBook releases of titles that were retailers exclusives previously, Natural Born Killers, Point Break and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Somewhere out there, there's a site listing Red Sonja for blu-ray release as well. With a previous StudioCanal 4K release of that title, I wonder if that listing is in error. Warner Bros is on track to announce a 4K release of Twister (1996) and (rumored, but inevitable) that they are working on Nightmare on Elm Street for 4K as well. Expect the usual formulas we have seen with the UK vs US releases with cover arts, swag/no swag, extra/no extras. 4K Release Calendar 2K/BD Release Calendar Which titles are you buying this week? Really, He's a Goodguy! Chucky Seasons One & Two Scaring Up Blu-ray Mediabooks from TurbineIn a world where franchises are sequeled, requeled, remade, and rebooted, it's nice to see one constant - Brad Dourif will always be Chucky - even on the small screen! Now Germany's Turbine unvails their Season One and Season Two Blu-ray Mediabook collections! As Brad Dourif has confirmed he's essentially retired from acting, he will continue to voice the lovable doll with a penchant for murder and mayhem!
