Legendary Reveals New Trailer for 'Pacific Rim: Uprising'[teaser]The sequel to Guillermo del Toro's 2013 sci-fi flick is drifting toward theaters in March.[/teaser] Legendary and Universal have released a second trailer for Pacific Rim: Uprising, offering a better look at the upcoming film's plot and new characters. The movie comes from director Steven S. DeKnight (Netflix's Daredevil, STARZ’s Spartacus) and is set to premiere on March 23. John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous "Kaiju." Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction. Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious' Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale. Check out the full trailer below! Pacific Rim: Uprising also stars Jing Tian, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona, and Charlie Day. The movie comes from a script written by Steven S. DeKnight, T.S. Nowlin, Kira Snyder, and Emily Carmichael, with a story by Steven S. DeKnight and T.S. Nowlin. Guillermo del Toro, the director of the original film, also serves as a producer on the sequel. Everything You Need to Know About the Maze Runner Universe Before Watching 'The Death Cure'***SPOILER WARNING about the first two Maze Runner films*** Three years ago, The Maze Runner hit theaters at a time when the craze for adapting YA novels was starting to finally wane. However, the sci-fi dystopian vision of humanity's demise stood out with its unique premise and an ensemble of likable characters that were challenged with mature themes, which were later expanded upon in the sequel. This weekend sees the series' third and final installment hit cinemas, bringing to a close the battle against being treated as test subjects to a mysterious organization's nefarious schemes. Going blind to the trilogy's conclusion can be confusing and puzzling, like trying to navigate through a convoluted labyrinth of cryptic phrases and made-up nonsense. But no worries, we're here to help guide you through the twists and turns of this elaborate maze. [Teaser]Here is everything you need to know, with brief recaps of the previous entries, about the Maze Runner universe before you watch The Death Cure.[/Teaser] The Maze Runner The first movie in the franchise kicks things off with a tremendous layer of mystery as a sleeping nameless teen wakes (Dylan O'Brien) inside an elevator racing to the top. While struggling to recall his identity, audiences are given one of the most blatant moments of heavy-handed exposition ever seen on film. The teen, who later realizes his name is Thomas, is literally given a tour of a primitive society of other boys living peacefully in "The Glades," which is surrounded by enormous stone walls that are part of an even larger maze. Certain parts of those walls open at specific times of the day, and a pair of "Runners" search the maze for a way out, which Thomas feels compelled to explore himself. Hence, the film's title and Thomas becoming the titular hero determined to solve life's biggest riddle: Why are we here? Thomas quickly becomes a threat to the idyllic community, and tensions rise higher when the first and only girl, Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), is thrown into the mix. Even worse, Thomas's curiosity invites a horde of mechanical, bug-like creatures called Grievers, making a solution to the maze all the more challenging. Nevertheless, Thomas, Teresa and a small team of boys run the maze and survive one death trap after another. They soon stumble unto a laboratory where they learn they were once part of an experiment searching for a cure to an infectious virus called The Flare, which followed soon after a massive solar flare devastated the planet. This is where we first meet Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson), the scientist behind this elaborate endeavor, but before we're given a chance to learn more, a group of armed masked men rush in and takes the kids on a helicopter ride over a vast desert wasteland. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials Breaking free of the concrete-fortified glades, the sequel picks up immediately after the events of the first movie with an explosive action sequence that leaves little time to breathe and catch one's bearings. Once the dust settles, the volatile opening finds Thomas (O'Brien) and his posse of resourceful survivors walled inside another concrete-fortified structure with even more tests and trials to perform before stumbling their way to another false sense of security and freedom. Only this maze features the more terrifying and perfidious labyrinth of human secrets and Machiavellian machinations, led by none other than Aidan "Littlefinger" Gillen. It doesn't take long before Thomas's curiosity, once again, leads his group head first into trouble while simultaneously discovering their gracious host is part of a mysterious organization known as WCKD, controlled by Ava Paige (Clarkson), who's still alive! (dun dun DUUUN!!) Arguably, the best part of The Scorch Trials is the kids trekking through an apocalyptic desert wasteland in search of a mysterious resistance militia known as The Right Arm. Along with seeing what's left of a planet Earth, the group learns the Flare virus turns the infected into zombies called Cranks, which they freakishly are. While exploring the virus's devastation upon humanity, they also discover pockets of societies trying to survive, joining forces with Rosa Salazar and Giancarlo Esposito. Eventually, they bump into The Right Arm, commanded by Barry Pepper and Lili Taylor, who informs us that Thomas was always a spy for the good guys. Their stay is short-lived, however, when Teresa is revealed a traitor, leading Clarkson and her WCKD goons to the camp where all hell breaks loose. The next morning, the remaining survivors vow vengeance with plans to finally bring the organization down and save humanity. And there you have it! The two movies leading up to the third and final installment in the Maze Runner trilogy. In The Death Cure, we can expect an explosive showdown with the determined Thomas and his meager band of resistance fighters infiltrating the heavily-fortified WCKD headquarters. Of course, they have a population of zombified infected, Teresa's betrayal, Aidan Gillen and Patricia Clarkson to contend with before achieving the inevitable happy-ever-after. And if it's anything like the previous two, the third entry should be a fun and relatively entertaining conclusion to the series.Posted Mon Jan 22, 2018 at 12:00 PM PST by:

A Fun Fan Theory About Blade Runner 2049Great films raise big questions while layering in big ideas and getting audiences thinking and talking as they pick apart plot points and story beats. Blade Runner 2049 is one such film, a complex neo-noir mystery that invites everyone to examine and reexamine important events, symbolism, and character relations while bathing one's eyes in visual mastery. But in all the reviews and blog posts and forums thread I've read about this amazing movie, I had a pretty cool idea that no one else is talking about. A bit of a fan theory of mine, if you will, but one that I think rings true upon repeat viewings. Now, I loathe spoilers. I hate them with a fiery passion. As such I wanted to discuss my take away from the film but didn't want to ruin the film for those who missed it in theaters. It is on this note that I warn you - if you have not seen Blade Runner 2049 - DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER. This article contains numerous major spoilers. If you haven't seen Blade Runner 2049 stop reading now. You've been warned. STOP reading if you haven't seen the movie. Okay, if you're still here, hopefully, that means you've seen Blade Runner 2049 at least once. If you've done that you'll have an idea of what I'm talking about. On the surface, Blade Runner 2049 is about a Replicant Blade Runner called K played by Ryan Gosling who finds himself caught up in a mystery surrounding the missing Rick Deckard played by Harrison Ford and the rogue Replicant called Rachel. This mystery sets K on a path of self-discovery that forces him to question not only who and what he is, but also what it means to be human. That little summation may be the plot of Blade Runner 2049, but at its core, that's not what the film is actually about. Not fully. It's my idea that Blade Runner 2049 is also about Deckard and Rachael's daughter, the memory maker Dr. Ana Stelline played by Carla Juri. Detective stories have a certain set of plot elements and Blade Runner 2049 is no different. The Detective -- K -- is out to solve the mystery. The Villian -- Jared Leto's Niander Wallace -- is pulling whatever strings he can to keep the mystery from going public. The Henchmen -- Luv, played by Sylvia Hoeks -- must carry out the Villian's plan. But there's an important element missing here. Who is the client? In Detective stories, someone has to hire the hero, be it an individual person or a law enforcement agency. And, sure, K works as a Blade Runner, but the mystery he's hired to solve is one sparked by a memory of a date carved into the bottom of a toy wooden horse that matches the one found at the base of Sapper's tree. Since K's memories actually belong to Dr. Ana Stelline, it's Ana who fills the traditional Client archetype. Which means, as a memory maker for Replicants, Ana must have purposefully seeded K with her memories in hopes of finding the truth about her parents! The only clue Ana has about her Parents is that memory of the wooden horse in the neo-Dickensian orphanage. Rachael died giving birth. Deckard disappeared either just before she was born or immediately after. All she has to go on is that toy with what turns out to be her birthday (and Rachel's death) carved into the foot. As we know from the movie, she gave this memory to K. But was K the only replicant to get her memories? How many other Replicants were given this memory? Unable to find her own parents because she's trapped making memories in a hermetically sealed room, it's logical that Ana would give numerous other Replicants and Blade Runners like K her memories in a desperate bid to find her parents. The scene where K meets Ana and she views the memory and confirms to him that it wasn't made up but actually lived isn't that simple. If you rewatch this scene, note Ana's emotional response. I'd argue it comes not only from the agony of seeing that event from her childhood again but also now knowing that someone is on the trail, that a "detective" has taken up her case. For the first time, she has hope that she might learn the fate of her parents if not possibly get to meet them. While K is clearly our protagonist, we are then learning Ana's story through K's journey. His memories of the wooden toy and the date become central to his investigation when he discovers the same date carved into the base of Sapper's tree above Rachael's grave. While K may have believed (hoped even) that he was the Replicant child at the core of the mystery, once he learns the truth, he's in too deep to just turn away. Like the classic detective, he must finish the job he was "hired" for. As K says to Deckard "The best memories were hers," who he is as an emotional being is because of Ana. He couldn't simply turn a blind eye and walk away, he had to see the job through to the end and reunite a daughter with her father even if that meant giving his own life. "Dying for the right cause. It's the most human thing we can do." Without Ana and her memories and her dream of finding her parents, there simply wouldn't be a movie. If K didn't have that memory of the horse, he wouldn't know what the date on Sapper's tree meant. It'd be just another random carving. K wouldn't know to look for the wooden horse in the furnace. He wouldn't know to go looking for Deckard. K simply would have remained as he was: believing he was a thing, a tool designed to kill other tools who no longer function as programmed until he himself would be unceremoniously retired. As I mentioned in my Blade Runner 2049 review, I left my first viewing in a bit of a hazy stupor and had to take a long, long walk to process what I had seen. I probably walked somewhere around five miles throughout Chicago thinking the movie through and it was during this walk that this little theory dawned on me. As I kept thinking it through I realized how well it worked out. After each subsequent viewing of the film, the idea has held up and makes the film even more interesting and engrossing for me. Not sure about it? Keep it in mind the next time you watch Blade Runner 2049. What do you think? Do you think this theory holds up? Or do you think it's a bunch of bunk? Obviously, a movie like this spawns a great number of fan theories, do you have one of your own? Feel free to add your two cents to the discussion!Posted Fri Jan 19, 2018 at 10:52 AM PST by:

Criterion Details April 2018 Blu-ray Titles[teaser]The distributor has revealed its upcoming slate of April releases, including Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides and Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man.[/teaser] In an early announcement to retailers, Criterion is preparing The Color of Pomegranates, The Awful Truth, Dead Man, and The Virgin Suicides for Blu-ray throughout the month of April. The Color of Pomegranates (April 17) - A breathtaking fusion of poetry, ethnography, and cinema, Sergei Parajanov’s masterwork overflows with images and sounds that burn into the memory. In a series of tableaux that blend the tactile with the abstract, The Color of Pomegranates revives the splendors of Armenian culture through the story of the eighteenth-century troubadour Sayat-Nova, charting his intellectual, artistic, and spiritual growth through iconographic compositions rather than traditional narrative. The film’s tapestry of folklore and metaphor departed from the realism that dominated the Soviet cinema of its era, leading authorities to block its distribution, with rare underground screenings presenting it in a restructured form. This edition features the cut closest to Parajanov’s original vision, in a restoration that brings new life to one of cinema’s most enigmatic meditations on art and beauty. - New 4K digital restoration, undertaken by The Film Foundation's World Cinema Project in collaboration with the Cineteca di Bologna, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack - New audio commentary featuring critic Tony Rayns- New video essay on the film's symbols and references, featuring scholar James Steffen- New interview with Steffen detailing the production of the film- SERGEI PARAJANOV: THE REBEL, a 2003 documentary about the filmmaker, featuring him and actor Sofiko Chiaureli - THE LIFE OF SAYAT-NOVA, a 1977 documentary about the Armenian poet who inspired THE COLOR OF POMEGRANATES- New English subtitle translation- PLUS: An essay by film scholar Ian Christie Order the Blu-ray The Awful Truth (April 17) - In this Oscar-winning farce, Cary Grant (in the role that first defined the Cary Grant persona) and Irene Dunne exude charm, cunning, and artless affection as an urbane couple who, fed up with each other’s infidelities, resolve to file for divorce. Try as they each might to move on, the mischievous Jerry can’t help but meddle in Lucy’s ill-matched engagement to a corn-fed Oklahoma businessman (Ralph Bellamy), and a mortified Lucy begins to realize that she may be saying goodbye to the only dance partner capable of following her lead. Directed by the versatile Leo McCarey, a master of improvisation and slapstick as well as a keen and sympathetic observer of human folly, The Awful Truth is a warm but unsparing comedy about two people whose flaws only make them more irresistible. - New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack - New interview with critic Gary Giddins about director Leo McCarey- New video essay by film critic David Cairns on actor Cary Grant's performance- Illustrated 1978 audio interview with actor Irene Dunne - LUX RADIO THEATRE adaptation of the film from 1939, starring actor Claudette Colbert and Grant- PLUS: An essay by film critic Molly Haskell Order the Blu-ray Dead Man (April 24) - With Dead Man, his first period piece, Jim Jarmusch imagined the nineteenth-century American West as an existential wasteland, delivering a surreal reckoning with the ravages of industrialization, the country’s legacy of violence and prejudice, and the natural cycle of life and death. Accountant William Blake (Johnny Depp) has hardly arrived in the godforsaken outpost of Machine before he’s caught in the middle of a fatal lovers’ quarrel. Wounded and on the lam, Blake falls under the watch of the outcast Nobody (Gary Farmer), who guides his companion on a spiritual journey, teaching him to dispense poetic justice along the way. Featuring austerely beautiful black-and-white photography by Robby Müller and a live-wire score by Neil Young, Dead Man is a profound and unique revision of the western genre. - New 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Jim Jarmusch, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack - New Q&A in which Jarmusch responds to questions sent in by fans- New readings of William Blake poems by members of the cast, including Mili Avital, Alfred Molina, and Iggy Pop- New selected-scene audio commentary by production designer Robert Ziembicki and sound mixer Drew Kunin- New interview with actor Gary Farmer- Deleted scenes- Jarmusch's location scouting photos- More!- PLUS: Essays by critic Amy Taubin and music journalist Ben Ratliff Order the Blu-ray The Virgin Suicides (April 24) - With this debut feature, Sofia Coppola announced her singular vision, which explores the aesthetics of femininity while illuminating the interior lives of young women. A faithful adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’s popular first novel, The Virgin Suicides conjures the ineffable melancholy of teenage longing and ennui in its story of the suicides of the five Lisbon sisters, stifled by the rules of their overprotective religious parents—as told through the collective memory of a group of boys who yearn to understand what happened. Evoking its 1970s suburban setting through ethereal cinematography by Ed Lachman and an atmospheric score by Air, the film secured a place for its director in the landscape of American independent cinema and has become a coming-of-age touchstone. - New, restored 4K digital transfer, supervised by cinematographer Ed Lachman and approved by director Sofia Coppola, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack - New interviews with Coppola, Lachman, actors Kirsten Dunst and Josh Hartnett, author Jeffrey Eugenides, and writer Tavi Gevinson- MAKING OF 'THE VIRGIN SUICIDES' a 1998 documentary directed by Eleanor Coppola and featuring Sofia Coppola; Eleanor and Francis Ford Coppola; actors Dunst, Hartnett, Scott Glenn, Kathleen Turner, and James Woods; Eugenides; and more- LICK THE STAR, a 1998 short film by Coppola- Official music video for Air's soundtrack song 'Playground Love,' directed and shot by Coppola and her brother Roman Coppola- Trailer- PLUS: An essay by novelist Megan Abbott Order the Blu-ray You can find the latest specs for all of the titles listed above linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where they're indexed throughout April.Posted Thu Jan 18, 2018 at 03:12 PM PST by: -

Disney Details Official Synopsis for 'Solo: A Star Wars Story'[teaser]The iconic smuggler is heading back to theaters in May.[/teaser] Disney and Lucasfilm have revealed the first official synopsis for Solo: A Star Wars Story. The film is set to premiere on May 25, 2018. Here's the full synopsis per StarWars.com: Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in Solo: A Star Wars Story, an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes. Though initially directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie), the studio replaced the filmmaking pair with Ron Howard following creative differences during the shoot. Howard then reshot portions of the movie and finished the production based on a script by writers Jon Kasdan & Lawrence Kasdan. The movie stars Alden Ehrenreich as a younger version of the iconic smuggler first made famous by Harrison Ford in the original trilogy. Additional cast members include Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Woody Harrelson, and Paul Bettany. More plot details and a trailer are still forthcoming, but fans can click here to check out various set photos and updates from the shoot as documented during the production on Tweeter and Instagram by director Ron Howard. Beyond Solo: A Star Wars Movie, Disney is set to release Star Wars: Episode IX on December 20, 2019. The final entry in the trilogy will be directed by J.J. Abrams. In addition, filmmaker Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) is also developing an entirely new trilogy of Star Wars films separate from the episodic Skywalker saga.
