RedBox Surveys Customers on Monthly Streaming Service[teaser]Kiosk rentals struck a blow to Blockbuster, but it looks like RedBox may be making a move towards Netflix. [/teaser] Netflix has a history of making pseudo announcements through surveys. The PS3, Wii, and now iPhone streaming services all hit just after surveys were sent out. Now RedBox, it seems, is doing the same thing, but that’s not the only cue they’ve taken from Netflix. The survey that went out to RedBox customers asked them to rate their interest in a streaming service that would cut the Netflix rate in half. At $3.95 a month, said the survey, customers would have access to unlimited streaming as well as four free kiosk rentals. Since a rental is usually a dollar anyway, that equates to free streaming for anyone who rents four movies or more a month. $3.95 is a nice low monthly fee, but that immediately raises questions of availability and compatibility. Part of the reason Netflix is so great is that you can use it on a huge range of devices. It’s also constantly being upgraded, with HD streaming coming to PC and 5.1 sound coming to all devices by the end of the year. If the RedBox service could offer a similar selection of films with an HD stream and the ability to stream from a Blu-ray player, it could be a huge threat to Netflix. If not, don’t expect to hear too much more about it.Posted Tue Apr 6, 2010 at 11:25 AM PDT by: -

Preorder Pricing on Sony’s 3D TVs Revealed[teaser]Sony’s LX900 series is priced dead even with Samsung’s 7000s. The HX series gets you 3D TV ready on the cheap, sort of. [/teaser] If you’re looking for 3D right out of the box, Sony’s LX900 series will do it. It comes with two pairs of active shutter glasses and the requisite 3D emitter. It’s also got head tracking technology to keep that 3D looking nice, and a lot of nice throw-ins like integrated WiFi, an edge lit display, and DNLA compliance. At 46 inches, you’re looking at an MSRP of $2,449. The HX800 is the cheapest of Sony’s new 3D capable TVs. It’s got an ambient light sensor to adjust color and brightness, and edge backlighting. It’s got access to all those Bravia widgets, though there’s no WiFi included. It’s got an MSRP of $1,999 for that same 46” size, but if you’re looking to go 3D, you’ll be spending another $320 or so for the adapter and glasses. Sony’s HX900 series is incredibly slick. Instead of the edge lighting seen in the other sets, the HX900 sports local dimming. It’s equipped with Bravia Engine 3 video processing, 24p film playback, and a 6 degree upward tilt for “natural viewing.” You’ll be able to pick it up at the same $2,499 as the LX900, but you’ll still have to pick up a 3D adapter and glasses.
