'Star is Born' Blu-ray to Receive 6k Restoration

Posted Jun 6, 2008 at 06:00 AM PDT by Peter Bracke

Warner has announced that it is restoring the 1954 classic 'A Star is Born' for eventual release on Blu-ray and standard DVD.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has selected the Judy Garland-James Mason starrer as the first title from its library to receive a complete overhaul at 6K resolution. (Most film restorations are currently done at 2K; a 6K file contains more than eight times the picture information of 2K.)

From restoration to scanning to mastering, the entire process is expected to take up to six months. The studio says the primary goal of the project is preservation, but that the restored film will also eventually be released on Blu-ray Disc and standard DVD.

"6K is typically a costly proposition, so that's why we are testing the waters on 'A Star is Born,'" Ned Price, VP Mastering at Warner Brothers Technical Operations told HR. "As the size of data is more easily managed and the tools become more accessible, we will increase our resolution."

Warner has not announced a release window for a Blu-ray version of 'A Star is Born,' nor any technical specs or supplement information, but as always we'll keep you posted as any details emerge.

In the meantime, we've added listing for 'A Star is Born' to the "Release Dates Pending" section of our comprehensive Blu-ray Release Schedule.
