As part of a unique online promotion, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment this week began offering a "third disc free" deal at participating online retailers, including Amazon.com.
For a limited time, consumers who purchase three Sony Blu-ray discs (from a selection of 34 total discs) will receive the third disc free. While the deal doesn't apply to all Sony Blu-ray discs, several format favorites make an appearance, including 'Casino Royale' and 'Black Hawk Down.'
The deal was first spotted at Amazon.com, but has since been reported at DVD Empire, as well. The lists on both sites are identical, although the selection process is slightly different.
At DVD Empire, consumers must choose their three discs from one of two lists -- one is a collection of discs priced at $20.84, while the other is collection of discs priced at $28.04.
At Amazon, consumers can choose from the entire list of 34 titles, which includes a mix of movies priced at $19.99 and $26.95. If the consumer chooses three discs at $26.95, they will receive a credit of $26.95 at checkout. If they choose three discs at $19.95 or a combination of discs at both price levels, they will receive a credit of $19.95 at checkout.
Only two days old, Sony's Blu-ray promo already seems to be making an impact on Amazon's real-time sales ranks. As of Wednesday night, a whopping eight Blu-ray titles appeared on Amazon's top 100 best selling DVDs list (vs only one title on the HD DVD side).
No word yet on how long this promotion will last.
