'Scary Movie' Heading to Blu-ray This Fall

Posted May 30, 2007 at 09:30 PM PDT by Unknown Author

In an early announcement, Disney Home Entertainment says it will bring the comedy blockbuster 'Scary Movie' to Blu-ray this October.

The smash hit parody of the 'Scream' series and the '90s slasher revival, the original 'Scary Movie' earned over $150 million at the domestic box office and launched a franchise of its own, which has seen three sequels to date (and counting).

Disney will release the film on Blu-ray on October 23. No spec or supplemental details are yet available, but we'll keep you posted.

Retail will list for a suggested $29.95.

In another example of how the next-gen format war can wreak havoc with long-running film franchises, the Scary Movie series finds itself split between the two next-gen formats -- Blu-ray-exclusive studio Disney currently controls the video rights to both 'Scary Movie' and 'Scary Movie 2,' while HD DVD-exclusive studio The Weinstein Co., controls rights to later installments 'Scary Movie 3' and 'Scary Movie 4,' having already released the latter on HD DVD late last year. As we first reported last September, it's an unfortunate predicament shared with The Terminator series.

Needlesstosay, we'll keep you posted on all future announcements of other 'Scary Movie' titles, regardless of format. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, we've added a new listing for 'Scary Movie' to our Blu-ray Release Schedule, under October 23. Watch this space for final specs to be unveiled in the coming weeks.
