UPDATE: (06/19/07 7:27PM ET)
We've received word directly from MGM late this afternoon that despite earlier reports to the contrary, the studio has not announced any new Blu-ray titles for this later year. The studio says that the Home Media Magazine article that broke the story earlier today was erroneous, and HMM has since removed the text pertaining to MGM's fourth quarter Blu-ray plans from their online story. An unedited version of the text from our original article on this topic follows below:
After an absence of several months from the next-gen scene, MGM Home Entertainment is renewing its Blu-ray commitment with a wave of nearly a dozen new titles set for release in the fourth quarter.
Though an early proponent of Blu-ray (along with parent distributor Fox Home Entertainment), MGM has not released a title on the format since 'Hoosiers' in early March. The studio has now apparently broken their silence to trade magazine Home Media Retailing, with a pledge of at least ten to twelve new Blu-ray releases by the end of 2007.
Only one specific title was revealed -- a 'Sergio Leone Anthology' box set, featuring four of the director's classic titles, including 'A Fistful of Dollars,' 'For a Few Dollars More,' 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' and 'Duck, You Sucker.'
No official street date or spec information was given for the 'Sergio Leone Anthology,' nor any of MGM's other planned 2007 Blu-ray titles, but we'll certainly keep you posted as details are confirmed.
The studio announced its Blu-ray re-emergence at this week's Sixth Annual Home Entertainment Summit, held in Century City, California.
This news from MGM comes during a particularly strong week for Blu-ray. On Monday, Blockbuster announced that it would go Blu-ray-only in 1,400-plus stores, and earlier today, Starz Home Entertainment revealed it was also throwing its exclusive weight behind Blu-ray with its first release 'Masters of Horror and other upcoming titles,' which will also be distributed under the MGM Home Entertainment banner.
In anticipation of an official announcement for the 'Sergio Leone Anthology,' we've added a new listing for the title to the "Release Dates Pending" section of our Blu-ray Release Schedule. Stay tuned!
