BCI has announced it will bring two cult classics from Spain's legendary horror star Paul Naschy to Blu-ray this January.
Released earlier this year on standard-def DVD, 'Night of the Werewolf' and 'Vengeance of the Zombies' will hit Blu-ray as a single-disc double feature on January 8, 2008.
The release is set to be the first next-gen title from BCI's genre label, Deimos Entertainment.
Sources say the two flicks will be presented on a single BD-50 dual-layer disc in their original uncut form, with each enjoying newly remastered high-definition masters and upgraded surround soundtracks (exact video and audio codecs TBA).
Extras will include an introduction by Naschy for each film, deleted scenes, still galleries and the original US theatrical trailers.
Deimos has set a $29.95 MSRP for the double feature.
Additional information from the distributor follows below:
For nearly four decades, Paul Naschy has been one of the true legends of Euro-Horror. Thrilling both fans and critics the world over from genre to mainstream, Naschy has created some of the most frightening and enduring horror films made, often serving as writer, director and star. His portrayal of the doomed lycanthrope (werewolf) Waldemar Daninsky has gained him instant recognition among horror fans everywhere and his depictions of other classic monsters Dracula, a Mummy, Mr. Hyde, as well as a host of demons have earned him the title of "the Spanish Lon Chaney". Released in 1980 and filmed in authentic Spanish castles, "NIGHT OF THE WEREWOLF" (El Retorno Del Hombre Lobo) remains one of Naschy's most impressive films. A sumptuous Gothic horror fest, "Night" pits Naschy's werewolf, Waldemar Daninsky, against the (real-life) Hungarian blood countess Elizabeth Bathory. Filled with werewolf transformations, seductive vampire women, bloody stakes through the heart and piercing silver daggers, the film has garnered praise over the years for its inventiveness with the genre and inspired use of macabre imagery. 1972's "VENGEANCE OF THE ZOMBIES" (La Rebelion De Las Muertas) offers a triple threat performance by Naschy as a Hindu mystic, his evil brother and the Devil himself. Zombies, satanic voodoo rituals and gruesome killings combine to make "Vengeance" a bizarre ride in the best horror tradition, a film that defines the term "Euro-Cult" as few other films can. Reportedly, practitioners of black magic have found hidden meanings in the film adding a new level of fear and terror to Vengeance's reputation. Because of censorship rules in Spain during the film's initial theatrical release, Naschy filmed alternate "clothed" scenes to replace the nude scenes filmed for international theatrical release. Deimos found these lost scenes and presents them as a bonus feature on the disc. |
