With the launch of Blu-Ray set for next month and the November arrival of the PlayStation 3 looming, Sony yesterday confirmed that disc production has officially begun, reports Total Video Games.

According to Sony DADC, the optical media producing arm of Sony of America, over 750,000 Blu-Ray discs are currently being produced a month; total output is expected to ramp up to 5 million discs by October 2006.

"Sony DADC is thrilled to be the leading optical disc manufacturing facility in the U.S. and has a full Blu-Ray BD-ROM line ready for production," said Dieter Daum, President of Sony Disc & Digital Solutions. "Blu-Ray is going to revolutionize the way consumers enjoy and interact with high definition entertainment content, and we are pleased to play a critical role in this important development."
