The Craft: Legacy

Actress turned filmmaker Zoe Lister-Jones (Life In Pieces) takes on another feature film here and sets the tale much like the first film where Lily (Cailee Spaeny from Bad Times At The El Royale) fills in for the Robin Tunney character, is the new girl with her single mom in town. With no friends around on her first day of class, she, unfortunately, has a menstruating accident in class, where a couple of guys mock her. Luckily, three friends Frankie (Gideon Adlon), Tabby (Lovie Simone from Selah And The Spades), and Lourdes (Zoey Luna) make her feel comfortable in the new school and not to worry about bleeding in class. These three women figure out Lily has certain powers just like them and the trio becomes a quartet, needing that fourth witching element to complete their coven. 

Instead of harming their bullies in sadistic ways, these new friends simply bewitch them into being better people, which is one of the few new fantastic directions this movie takes. The main jerk in the film Timmy is now the sweet, sensitive, and apologetic guy on campus, who becomes friends with Lily and the others and is more or less the main conscious of the film as it progresses. Meanwhile, Lily and her mother Helen (Michelle Monoghan) move into a giant estate inhabited by a motivational speaker named Adam (David Duchovny) and his three sons. There is certainly trouble brewing inside this household as Adam becomes increasingly bizarre and sinister. As the four witchy women are doing their best to make their town and classmates better people, Lily discovers out some news about her past that takes the film to an excellent and surprising place that is sure to please a ton of fans.

The Vital Stats: The Blu-ray

The Craft: Legacy comes to Blu-ray with a 1080p HD transfer from Sony. The disc is housed in a hard, blue plastic case with the artwork of the film, featuring a haunting witchy look at the four women of the film. There is an insert for the digital copy as well included, but not a DVD copy. There are a few trailers for other Sony movies that play before the main menu comes up. 

The Craft: Legacy comes with a wonderful 1080p HD transfer in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. Sony's home video releases have looked amazing over the years and this film can be added to that long list of great looking titles. The color palette is rather bright and vibrant for a horror film, which is a great breath of fresh air in the genre. The teenagers and high school all come with their fancy glittery lip gloss makeup, colorful bright wardrobe, and even some supernatural occurrences that enhance the color field. The witchy baptism in the bathtub showcases a pink and purple glow with pink walls and wonderful pastel-colored flowers in the crystal white water.

When at the homestead, the color palette changes to a warmer tone of amber lights and browns. Black levels are deep and inky and skin tones are natural throughout. The detail is sharp and vivid, revealing close-ups that showcase makeup applications, wrinkles, freckles, blemishes, and individual hairs. The small number of visual effects also look stunning here and never soft. Wider shots have depth in the forest as well as in the high school. There are no major issues with banding, aliasing, or video noise located on this disc. 

This release comes with a lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio track that isn't as boisterous or immersive as it could be. A lot of the film plays on the front speakers when it comes to surround activity and there are only a couple of instances where the soundscape utilizes its full potential. It's not a bad audio mix by any means, but it's rather downplayed in most areas. Perhaps the biggest bang in the sound design is in the climactic sequence at the end where it's good vs evil.

The ambient noises of the woods and trees come into play, the dialogue sounds off perfectly, and the magical spells and score all come into one cohesive sound. Other than that, it's rather soft-spoken for the most part. Sure, the ambient noises of kids opening lockers and walking down hallways at the high school sound good, but that's the extent of it. The music cues and score sound great and the bass kicks in with a low rumble during these times and especially at the end of the film. Dialogue is always clean and clean and free of any audio issues. 

There are about 18 minutes of bonus material included here, all of which are very short EPK type material and feature no behind the scenes information. Additionally, there are four extended sequences. 

• Franchise Legacy (HD, 3 Mins.) - Some of the cast and crew talk about the original 1996 film and the impact it made on them and fans.
• Powerful Story, Magical Director (HD, 3 Mins.) - Cast and crew talk about working with the director Zoe Lister-Jones.
• Extended And Alternate Scenes (HD, 12 Mins.) - Zoe Lister-Jones introduces four extended clips from the film, nothing of which is too revealing or important. 

The Craft: Legacy is a wonderful, fantastic sequel reboot to the iconic 1996 film. This is an instance where everything and everyone fell perfectly in place and made a knock-out movie with great performances, and a good story, and one heck of a cliffhanger at the end. The video and audio presentations are both great, but the extras are too short, unimportant, and not entertaining. Still, this comes RECOMMENDED!
