In the 1930s and 1940s, before George Pal made classic features like The Time Machine (1960) and The War of the Worlds (1953), he created dazzling stop-motion animated short subjects called PUPPETOONS™ which utilized an astonishing Pal invention called the replacement figure or series puppet. Inconceivably, thousands of crafted wood puppets would be replaced for each frame of film. Pal’s Big Idea transformed the flat cartoon into three dimension. Over the years, Puppetoons are often praised as some of the greatest works of stop-motion animation ever conceived.
In 1987, working with Mrs. George Pal, Arnold Leibovit produced and directed The Puppetoon Movie©. In 2013, an acclaimed HD restoration Blu-ray was released and now for the first time Leibovit presents Puppetoon masterpieces restored from Original 35mm Technicolor Successive Exposure Negatives (SEN) or 35mm (IB) Imbibition Technicolor Nitrate Prints.
