Terminator: Dark Fate
Overview -
He said he'd be back again… and again… and now even with James Cameron, Linda Hamilton, and Schwarzenegger back in the saddle, franchise fatigue may have finally taken Terminator: Dark Fate. Even with a solid cast, great action, and an intriguing idea where and how to expand the franchise, fans split with the results and this series may be pulled off life support - at least for a few years. You may love it or hate it, but Paramount churned out a technically terrific disc with an excellent video transfer, a robust Dolby Atmos audio track and some interesting worthwhile bonus features. Vital Disc Stats: The Blu-ray
Terminator: Dark Fate attacks Blu-ray in a two-disc Blu-ray + DVD + Digital set from Paramount. Housed in a two-disc standard case, the disc loads to trailers for other Paramount releases before arriving at an animated main menu with traditional navigation options.
Video Review
Terminator: Dark Fate enjoys a bright and sunny future on 1080p Blu-ray. While the format doesn't enjoy the added definition or the benefits of HDR, Dark Fate still looks terrific on this disc. If 4K didn't exist, this would be demo-material. Details are terrific allowing you to soak in the impressive makeup effects, facial features, and the film's better usage of CGI. Colors are bright and bold holding to a yellow tone. Compared to the 4K disc, this yellow is a bit more uniform without dynamic shading, but that doesn't mean everything is cast in a banana yellow wash. Skin tones are still healthy. Blues and reds still pop off the screen beautifully. Black levels are where I get a little iffy here. There are a few moments where blacks aren't the deep inky we expect and instead take on a hazy quality. Thankfully image depth isn't too deeply impacted, there's still a nice sense of three-dimensional depth, but some of these moments like when they're first escaping in a helicopter that stood out. Not the worst complaint to have when it amounts to only a slight gripe compared to what the rest of the image has to offer.
Audio Review
Terminator: Dark Fate Blu-ray enjoys the same terrific Dolby Atmos audio mix as the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Final Thoughts
Perhaps too little too late - or too much too late - Terminator: Dark Fate proved powerless to reinvigorate the flailing franchise at the box office. Even with Schwarzenegger and the return of Linda Hamilton with James Cameron back as a producer, fans stayed away from theaters and this film may be the final bow for the series. At least for a couple of years anyway. It's decent action entertainment but how it goes about advancing its story may put off some.
Paramount delivers Terminator: Dark Fate with a technically solid disc featuring a strong transfer and an immersive Atmos audio track. Bonus features may not be plentiful, but they have quality material to cover that's actually worth looking at. If you're a franchise lover that needs to own every entry - or if you thought this was the refreshing sequel you've been waiting for - Dark Fate is a Recommended Blu-ray.
