Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw
Overview -
With Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprising their roles as the titular characters, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is an unexpectedly fun and spectacularly satisfying spinoff, delivering on the franchise's central theme of family packaged in the familiar odd-couple buddy-cop formula. The movie goes ballistic on Blu-ray with a reference-quality HD video, a beefy Dolby Atmos track but a decent set of supplements. The overall package is Highly Recommended.
Unforgettable franchise favorites Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson; "Skyscraper," "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle") and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham; "The Meg," "Spy") forge an unlikely partnership that provides fresh insight into their backstories. Johnson and Statham's "sheer movie star charisma" (Scott Mendelson, Forbes) take the action, spectacle, thrills and humor to a new level and have already earned the film more than $680 million at the global box office.

Vital Disc Stats: The Blu-ray
Universal Studios Home Entertainment brings Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw to Blu-ray as a two-disc combo pack with a Digital Copy code. The Region Free BD50 disc sits comfortably opposite a DVD-9, and both come inside a blue, eco-elite case with a slipcover. After several skippable trailers, viewers are taken to a static menu with music.
Video Review
The buddy-comedy actioner spins completely off course on Blu-ray, supercharged with an awesomely muscular, reference-quality 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode, showing razor-sharp definition from the opening sequence until the post-credits scenes. We can plainly make out every rippling muscle and vein in Johnson's bulging arms, and the individual whiskers in Statham's face, along with every furrow in his permanently-furious brow, are distinct. The stitching in the fabric, texture and minute features in Elba's high-tech suit are incredibly detailed, and every bit of CG-animated debris, fragment and piece of rubble during action sequences are clear-cut and discrete. Facial complexions are highly revealing, exposing every wrinkle, pore and negligible blemish with striking lifelike textures.
Presented in its original 2.39:1 aspect ratio, the freshly-minted transfer also boasts spot-on contrast with brilliantly crisp whites, and highlights glow with sparkling intensity without washing away the finer details within the hottest, most explosive moments. On the opposite end, black levels are inky and true with excellent gradational differences in the clothing and vehicles while the action is continuously showered in silky dark shadows that penetrate deep into the screen, providing the image with plenty of appreciable dimensionality. Primaries are richly saturated and sumptuously animated, especially the steely blue sheen while in the city, and secondary hues are spirited and vividly animated, making the Somoa sequences pop with lush green foliage, fiery oranges and warm, radiant yellows. (Video Rating: 96/100)
