Video Review

Ranking:

A wrecking crew of cutely outraged birds and pigs fight broken hearts on Blu-ray with a stunning, reference-quality 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode. Fine lines and details in the individual feathers of the birds are striking, and the unique features of each island are plainly visible even from a wide distance and during the many action sequences while the smallest imperfection of the houses is sharply distinct. Spot-on contrast supplies the comedic exploits with radiantly intense whites while highlights in the clouds, water and icy surfaces sparkle with a glistening, crisp brilliance. Brightness levels bathe the 1.85:1 image in inky-rich, silky blacks, from the feathers of Bomb to the big, bushy eyebrows of Red. The freshly-minted transfer is also saturated in a sumptuous array of energetic primaries, especially the vibrant reds of birds and the lively greens of the surrounding foliage. Likewise, the CG-animated sequel is beautifully layered in dynamic, spirited secondary hues with purples, pinks and other soft pastels, making for a feast for the eyes HD video presentation for the whole family. Audio Review

Ranking:

The sequel also hatchets on Blu-ray with an excellent DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack that brings the sling-shot action and trio of angry island critters to life.

Being an animated family comedy, a majority of the action is confined to the front three channels, generating a broad and expansive soundstage with convincing off-screen effects and superb definition in the mid-range. Heitor Pereira's score and song selections enjoy exceptional acoustic detailing and warmth, turning the fun visuals into an effectively engaging wall of sound. While vocals are pristine and precise even during the loudest segments, the low-end provides a deep and palpable presence to the action and music with a couple welcomed moments of wall-rattling rumbles.

Rear activity is relatively quiet, except for some completely random and erratic ambient effects here and there. Also, a few atmospherics, like the birds and gigantic ice balls flawlessly panning across the room or large chunks of debris raining down everywhere, occasionally employ the surrounds, nicely expanding the soundfield and enveloping the listening room. However, such moments are far and few in between and not particularly immersive enough to score any higher or comparable to some of the better new releases. (Audio Rating: 76/100)

Final Thoughts

The unexpected CG-animated hit of 2016 hatches a sequel, the aptly-named The Angry Birds Movie 2, that is as entertainingly silly and fun as its predecessor. Starring a large ensemble of voice talents, the story ruffles more than just the feathers of the franchise's cardinal hero by introducing Eagle Island and another angry avian villain, making for a strong follow-up with a touching, endearing theme for all the little hatchlings in the audience. Birds and pigs united land on Blu-ray with a gorgeous, reference-quality video presentation and complemented by an excellent DTS-HD MA soundtrack. With a decent set of supplements, the overall package makes a recommended addition to the family.
