The Virginia Cavaliers won the programs first-ever NCAA Men's National Championship by outlasting the Texas Tech Red Raiders in overtime 85-77 at U. S. Bank stadium in Minneapolis. DeAndre Hunter, Ty Jerome, and Kyle Guy combined for 67 points against Texas Tech, including 11 of Virginia s 17 overtime points. Hunter, who had nine rebounds, scored a career-high 27 points. His final play of the night was a defensive rebound. As the final buzzer sounded, Hunter flung the ball in the air and the celebration began. Guy finished the championship game with 24 points on 8-of-15 from the field and was named the tournaments Most Outstanding Player. Celebrating with his family and teammates after the confetti dropped, Jerome said, This is everything you dream of since you re a little kid. Like Virginia (35-3), Texas Tech (31-7) was playing in the NCAA final for the first time. Brandone Francis led the Red Raiders with 17 points. Before the coming of head coach Chris Beard, the Red Raiders had won a total of three NCAA tournament games since 2000.
