Jigsaw

With a seven-year gap between the last Saw movie and Jigsaw, not to mention the excellent Spierig Bros. hopping into the director's chair this time around, you'd think the horror franchise would feature some originality and fresh twists. Unfortunately, that's not really the case here as it's business as usual from start to finish as far as the story and characters go.

Set ten years after the death of Jigsaw himself (Tobin Bell), we find that Tobin Bell returns with new, insane games and torture devices while a team of police detectives and forensic examiners try and stop him.

The Blu-Ray: Vital Disc Stats

Jigsaw comes with a 50GB Blu-ray Disc from A24/Lionsgate, along with a DVD copy of the film. There is an insert for a digital download code here too. The disc is housed in a hard, blue plastic case.

Jigsaw boasts a solid 1080p HD transfer and is presented in 2.39:1 aspect ratio.

Despite a few exterior locations where the colors look more naturalistic, most of this film features heavy color filters, either a heavy blue filter or a reddish/orange filter when the unfortunate players are in the barn. Both color schemes accentuate their respective locations and tones, nicely, while various forms blood are sure to leave you squirming. 

Fine details are visible throughout, save for heavier-filtered scenes where there is an added layer of noise and murkiness. For instance, there's a sequence with hayseeds pouring out of a ceiling that is much clearer on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. Still, this HD picture provides a great look up at all the practical makeup effects with all of gory guts and bits. Scuff marks, rust, and indentations from antique farm equipment and torture devices also look amazing. Black levels are deep and inky without any crush, and skin tones are natural in their respective environments without filters. There were no other issues to speak of, leaving this video presentation with solid marks.

This Blu-ray comes with the same Dolby Atmos track that is found on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. A very good mix, overhead speakers deliver gooey and horror noises all around you with the added greatness of sharp objects falling down above you. It's not perfect, but often phenomenal.

With a commentary and two featurettes, there's a lot of ground covered here. Fans should be pleased. 

Audio Commentary - Producers Gregg Hoffman, Oren Koules, and Mark Burg deliver a decent commentary track as they talk about making the film. They are obviously big fans of the franchise and excited to be a part of the new film. They talk about bringing back Tobin Bell, the new storyline, casting, visual effects, the barn, and the gore. It's a fun commentary track if you loved the film.

I Speak For The Dead: The Legacy of Jigsaw Documentary (HD, 82 Mins.) - Content-wise, this is an in-depth look at the making of the film with tons of cast and crew interviews, on-set footage, and behind the scenes that show us how certain scenes were done and what went into the story and characters, and score. Tobin Bell pops up too. It's a great bonus feature.

The Choice is Yours: Exploring the Props (HD, 7 Mins.) - Not sure why this was left out of the above impressive bonus feature, but here we get a cool look at all the different devices, torture room, and aspects of how they were made here. 

Jigsaw is a fun movie that brings the gore and suspense to an all-time high along with the return of Jigsaw himself. There isn't anything to fresh or original this time around though, but if you're a fan of the franchise, you can expect more or less the same entertainment. The 1080p HD video looks quite good, and while it's not on par with the 4K Ultra HD Disc, the same Dolby Atmos track and supplements are included, making this Blu-ray Recommended.
