The legend of the pure-hearted Momotaro leading his small band of faithful animal friends to vanquish the hoards of Devil's Island gets updated as WWII propaganda here in Japan's first feature length animated film. Young Momotaro is a imperial Navy officer leading his crew of animal soldiers to mobilize the local animals of a tropical island in the South seas. Their orders are to set up an airbase from which to strike the British troops in Malaya. Depicted as debased horned devils, the Brits are easily defeated by the virtuous Japanese. The Spider and the Tulip tells the simple tale of a spider's various attempts to lure a ladybug into his web.
