Adapted by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala (and an uncredited Harold Pinter) from the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, The Remains of the Day (1993) is brought to the screen by the celebrated filmmaking team of director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant. The singular Anthony Hopkins incarnates an enigmatic figure: Stevens, the perfect English butler at the stately home of Lord Darlington (James Fox). Stevens’ highly ordered life is ruffled by the arrival of a lively new housekeeper, Miss Kenton (a marvelous Emma Thompson), and the encroachment of apparently pro-Nazi appeasement politics as the 1930s come to an uneasy close. Also starring Christopher Reeve and Hugh Grant.
