Chucky - Season 2 Mediabook Cover A (German Import)

Overview -

Blu-ray Review By: Bryan Kluger
Chucky Goes to Catholic School in the second season of his own show where he is out for revenge on everyone who wronged him in the previous season. It's a frightening hoot from start to finish. The 1080p HD transfer looks great and the DTS-HD 5.1 audio mixes sound wonderful. The lack of extras is very disappointing. Still, Chucky owns the world with his violent murders and comedic dialogue, so this comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Storyline: Our Reviewer's Take

Ranking:

It doesn't make much sense to the naked eye why Chucky: Season One was met with rave reviews that had TV audiences talking about the show for weeks on end but after watching that first season, it was easy to see why the show reignited horror TV and the franchise. Its dark comedy, silly one-liners, practical gore effects, and excellent cameos from previous characters made it easy to love Chucky all over again. Season Two ups the ante as Chucky tries to take revenge on the three teenagers from Season One, Jake (Zackary Arthur), Devon (Bjorgvin Arnarson), and Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind) along with anybody else that gets in his way, including his romantic relationship with Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly). The carnage and mayhem go a long, brutal, funny way this season as Chucky becomes a devoted Catholic.

That's right. After Chucky blows up a young boy and frames Jake, Devon, and Lexy, the three teenagers end up at a Catholic School that utilizes punishment and anti-LGBT views to keep these kids in line. It is led by a returning Devon Sawa as the headmaster of Incarnate Lord - the Catholic School where the showrunners have a ton of fun with religious jokes as Chucky murders his way through the new digs. The Chucky narrative though is all over the place and has returning characters from past films showing up as their characters and their real-life actor personas. It can be a little confusing when Jennifer Tilly the actress is playing a version of herself alongside her character Tiffany.

But in the voodoo world, anything goes, right? The same is to be said for Brad Dourif's daughter Fiona who plays Nica Pierce in the franchise. In this second season though, she pulls double duty as Nica and evokes the voice of Chucky when someone casts a voodoo spell over her. The showrunners and the three main leads do a great job again of setting the story on track as Chucky preys upon his victims one by one by uttering hilariously offensive lines of dialogue toward women, children, and the gay community.

The guts and gore are at an all-time high and the camerawork is slick and explores some inventive ways to shoot kill scenes and comedy with the use of camera phones, titled angles, and tons of metaphors hanging on the wall in the Catholic home. Brad voicing Chucky is exquisite still some 35 years later. He embodies the soul and essence of Chucky with his words and delivery where it's hard to not love Chucky, even when he's killing people. The rest of the cast turn in fantastic preferences and further, their layered issues in their character work inside of drugs, alcohol, and LGBTQ problems - not to mention the Catholic church disciplining them for being kids. Chucky: Season Two is a home run and displays every checked box anyone would want in comedy or horror.

Vital Disc Stats: The Blu-ray
Chucky: Season Two casts a voodoo spell on Blu-ray via Turbine Medien and Universal in the form of a two-disc Digibook with alternate packaging. The two discs are Region-Free and house four episodes each. The discs rest inside a thick Digibook with a booklet that features essays on the killer doll. It's a great-looking package.

Video Review

Ranking:

Chucky: Season Two comes with a 1080p HD transfer via Turbine Medien and Universal. This looks to be the same video presentation from the stateside release a year or so ago.  And like Season One, this has one gorgeous-looking digital picture that is perfectly stylized in its own world. Blood reds splash out front and center with every kill. The bomb that kills the child in the first episode has a wonderful tint of green that contrasts nicely with the pastel colors inside the house.

The Catholic Church oozes those dark shades of brown and black wooden walls and Tilly's house has bright shades of pink and red. Black levels are inky and rich and the skin tones are natural. The detail is sharp with excellent closeups that reveal individual hairs, gory practical makeup effects, facial pores, textures in the rubber dolls, and stitching in clothing. There is some minor video noise but it's nothing major. This is a great-looking video image.

Audio Review

Ranking:

This release also comes with both a German and English DTS-HD 5.1 audio option. In the USA, English is the way to go, however, give the German version a chance because it's hilarious to listen to Chucky tell jokes and yell in the German language. Sound effects are loud and effective, whether it be explosions, cars driving off cliffs, church bells, or eerie noises of voodoo spells. Dialogue is clean, clear, and free of any issues while the score and song selection take hold of the speaker system with g great crescendos and needle drops. Surround activity provides wonderful atmospheric screams and footsteps while the kill sequences add that hefty low end of the bass with a wonderful rumble. This second season has a fantastic audio mix.

Special Features

Ranking:

What an unfortunate lack of extras on this amazing show. There are only 2 minutes worth of deleted scenes and that's it. This show is extremely fun to make from all of the social media posts from the cast and crew. So where are the fun behind-the-scenes featurettes, commentary tracks, or even a gag reel? I hope Universal gets its act together and puts forth an amazing set of bonus features in the future.

  • Deleted Scenes (HD, 2 Mins.) - There are only two deleted scenes included, both of which are worth a watch.
  • Booklet - There is a new illustrated booklet with essays on the TV show, the character, and its actors.

Final Thoughts

Chucky: Season Two is just as great if not better than its debut season. It ups the kills and goes bigger, stronger, and faster with its characters. The murder scenes are top-notch and Chucky's comedy is at an all-time high. The 1080p HD video and the DTS-HD 5.1 audio tracks are fantastic. The lack of extras is completely frustrating, however, the Digibook looks amazing this time around. Highly Recommended!
