Chucky - Season 1 Mediabook Cover A (German Import)

Overview -

Blu-ray Review By: Bryan Kluger
Chucky: Season One
has a new group of teenagers trying to outlive, outsmart, and outwit the killer doll known as Chucky from the previous seven feature films. This new show brings a ton of heart, murder, blood, and laughs as new and old characters show up and face off with the serial-killing doll. This German import from Turbine Medien sports a great-looking 1080p HD video presentation, wonderful English and German DTS-HD 5.1 audio options, and a decent bonus feature that should have been longer. For those who don't already own the US version, this beautiful Digi-Book looks and sounds great with a new essay on the franchise and is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Storyline: Our Reviewer's Take

Ranking:

Doesn't everyone love it when a horror movie transfers to a TV show for more carnage, comedy, and mayhem? It happened with Evil Dead and Bruce Campbell where fans rejoiced in three brand new seasons of Ash fighting Deadites to rave reviews. Oddly back in the '80s, Friday the 13th tried its hand in the TV market, however, no characters or Jason Vorhees himself showed up in the episodes. Nightmare on Elm Street copied the formula but didn't have Freddy front and center in each episode other than to host each episode and sporadically cameo for a minute or two. Child's Play is a different beast altogether here. Through seven feature films, a horrid reboot, and an Oscar appearance, Chucky finally got his own TV series that just knocks it all out of the park with its gore, humor, characters, and fun.

Chucky: Season One follows the events of each of its previous movies, bringing that amazing sense of continuity to its story. One of the many great things about Chucky is his ability to murder people in creative, fun ways, along with his hilarious commentary on how he hates most things in life with a sadistic, dry charm. Season One is full of these moments in each episode. But that is not what makes the show tick. Like most of the movies, the human characters are what make this universe glow. Writer and creator Don Mancini returns as series creator to bring Chucky and his new best friends to the end of a violent journey. The main protagonist is similar to a young Andy Barclay, named Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur), who is a teenager with an unsavory home life. His mother is dead and his father (Devon Sawa) is an abusive alcoholic. Jake loves dolls and making horrifying art projects out of them, which leads him to find Chucky at a yard sale. Soon enough in the first episode, Jake realizes who this new Good Guy doll is that sets himself and his unlikely peers at his school on a murderous adventure.

And that's a brilliant gem of Chucky: Season One where following Jake isn't a straight and narrow path of good and evil. Jake struggles with whether or not to go along with Chucky's plans or to stop him at all costs. His friends come to his aid in various ways but are seduced by Chucky. Not only that, but Jake and his friends all have issues at home that are examined whether it be parents who don't care for their children, or coming out as gay in high school, this show has it all. And kudos for the Child's Play franchise still sticking with the LGBTQ world like they did in their earlier films that were pioneers for LGBT representation. But these character highlights level up the stakes and development of each nuanced performance when dealing with the unreal world that Chucky has created. In its first eight episodes, Chucky (Brad Dourif) manages to kill a ton of people in gory, creative ways, bring unlikely friends together, and cross paths with people from the previous films that bring the entire story around full circle from hospital stays to parties at a mansion - Chucky kills his way into everyone's hearts in the first season of this stellar TV show.

Vital Disc Stats: The Blu-ray
Chucky: Season One kills its way to Blu-ray via Universal and Turbine Medien with two Region-Free Blu-ray Discs inside one of three different Digi-Book styles. There is a fully illustrated booklet with an essay that covers the franchise and the TV series.

Video Review

Ranking:

Chucky: Season One comes with a 1080p HD transfer that looks to be the same transfer from the US release in 2022.

The colors come from a wonderful digital image that looked great streaming on Peacock. With this physical release, the presentation is better with bolder and richer colors in each episode. This is stylized visual horror without tons of dark corners or musty old rooms. Every kill has some form of blue, purple, red, or bright light in the background to give it a more modern and fun look. Green trees look amazing and the blue and red Good Guy clothing are fantastic. The red blood pops every time it secretes across the screen.

The detail is vivid and showcases the great rubbery textures of Chucky's face. Individual hairs, practical gore effects, and stitching in the wardrobe are all visible. Wider shots never go soft either. The black levels are inky and the skin tones are natural. This is a very vibrant-looking horror series that utilizes an assortment of beautiful colors to its advantage to scare and make things more impressive. There are no lasting problems with this amazing video presentation.

Audio Review

Ranking:

This release comes with both a DTS-HD 5.1 German dubbed audio option and the DTS-HD 5.1 English version. Both sound good, however, hearing Chucky talk in German is funny-as-hell. But for the folks in the USA, the English option sounds excellent. The sound effects are robust and boisterous when the action heats up. Kill scenes are on high alert for bodies crashing into objects, gunshots, knife slices, and brutal beatdowns. The creepy footsteps and haunting noises are heard through each surround speaker. The score and soundtrack allow for fun and energetic music cues and crescendos. The low end of the bass is never overtly loud but applies an exquisite addition to each action beat with a good rumble. The dialogue is clean, clear, and easy to follow without any issues. But listen to Chucky in German, it's amazingly comical.

Special Features

Ranking:

While the featurette is fun to watch, it's only 11 minutes long. There should be hours of great bonus material with his show and there isn't.

  • The Legacy of Chucky (HD, 11 Mins.) - Cast and crew talk about the film franchise, the character of Chucky, the returning characters in the show, and what the horror movies meant to each of them.
  • Deleted Scenes (HD, 4 Mins.) - There are three deleted scenes, all of which are worth watching.
  • Booklet - A great essay and picture book on the Chucky franchise and the TV show at hand are included.

Final Thoughts

Chucky: Season One is an edgy, hilarious horror series that brings to life one of the great horror icons - Chucky for more adventures that continue his legacy from the feature films. Bringing back old and new characters is also a treat for every fan. The German physical media boutique Turbine Medien has given Season One the Digi-Book treatment that echoes the previous Universal release in the States. This time, there is a great essay about the franchise that one can Google translate on a mobile device. Digi-Books look better than regular Blu-ray releases on the self, so for those who don't already own this Season, it's Highly Recommended!
