The Chinese action flick is heading westward to high-definition next month.

Tai Seng says 'Beast Stalker' is coming to Blu-ray in North America on October 27.

Ace action director Dante Lam (Beast Cops, Option Zero, Hit Team) is in top form once again with this raw, nail bitingly intense action thriller, and with award-worthy emotional performances by Nicholas Tse (Invisible Target and Dragon Tiger GATE) and Nick Cheung (Connected, Johnnie To's Exiled and Election). When Cheung hired the menacing "Beast Stalker" Hung (Cheung) to kidnap the dead girl's twin sister to avoid prosecution, Tong vows not to let the same fatal mistake happens again. With spectacular action and car chases choreographed by legendary Hong Kong stuntman Bruce Law, Beast Stalker is one gritty, tension-filled cop-and-robber thriller that will have you riveted from beginning to end.

The Blu-ray will feature 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, a Cantonese Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack (with optional subtitles) and supplements haven't been revealed yet.

Suggested list price for the Blu-ray has been set at $29.95.

Tai Seng Nixes 'Dragon Tiger Gate' HD DVD, Re-Announces for Blu-ray

Tags: Disc Announcements, Street Date Changes, Tai Seng (all tags)

Tai Seng has canceled the HD DVD release of 'Dragon Tiger Gate,' and announced that it will instead issue the title on Blu-ray this May.

As we've previously reported, 'Dragon Tiger Gate' was originally scheduled for a February 26 release exclusively on HD DVD. The title will now debut on Blu-ray May 27.

Offering a unique twist on the format-agnostic approach, Tai Seng had said that it planned on "testing the waters" with the HD DVD release of 'Gate,' which had been scheduled to hit shelves the same day as its Blu-ray-only release of 'Initial D' (that title arrived in stores as planned on February 26).

Although Tai Seng has not issued official word of a change in their format-neutral stance, at press time they had no future HD DVD titles planned. We'll keep you posted on any changes to the company's plans as they come to us.

Announced specs for the Blu-ray version of 'Dragon Tiger Gate' appear to best the now-canceled HD DVD version. The BD-50 dual-layer release will boast a Cantonese 7.1 Surround track (bumped up from the 5.1 on the HD DVD), additional English and Mandarin 5.1 mixes, and 1080p video.

Supplements include an audio commentary with the filmmakers, a "making of" documentary, eight additional featurettes, deleted scenes, a still gallery, and domestic and international theatrical trailers (all of which were announced for the HD DVD).

Suggested retail price for the Blu-ray is $29.95.

In light of Tai Seng's news, we've added a listing for 'Dragon Tiger Gate' to our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where it's indexed under May 27.

Tai Seng Jumps Into Blu-ray with 'Initial D' (UPDATED)

Fri Nov 23, 2007 at 11:00 AM ET
Tags: Disc Announcements, Tai Seng (all tags)

Update: (11/29/07) We've received clarification from Tai Seng that although 'Initial D' is scheduled for Blu-ray only, the company is format-agnostic, and is planning future releases on both high-def disc formats. We'll keep you posted on all upcoming Tai Seng announcements as soon as they are officially confirmed.)

Asian cinema powerhouse Tai Seng is shifting its next-gen support into high-gear this January, with the Blu-ray-exclusive bow of the Hong Kong blockbuster 'Initial D.'

From the acclaimed director Andrew Lau and based on the popular manga of the same name, 'Initial D' is a 2005 live-action spectacular about the dangerous streetcar sport of "drifting." A box office phenomenon in its native Hong Kong, the success of 'Initial D' proved so great it even achieved crossover status on these shores, helping to inspire Universal's hit sequel 'Fast and the Furious: Toyko Drift.'

Long one of the biggest domestic distributors of Asian cinema on DVD, Tai Seng has apparently chosen Blu-ray as its next-gen format of choice, and will launch 'Initial D' on January 22, 2008.

Tai Seng has only issued preliminary specs thus far, with the Blu-ray set to include 1080p video and audio tracks in the original Chinese and an English dub(format TBA).

No supplemental details are available yet, but the two-disc special edition of 'Initial D' that Tai Seng issued on DVD last year was loaded with extras, so we'll keep our hopes up that some if not all of that material will find its way to the next-gen version. We'll keep you posted.

Suggested retail price for the Blu-ray will be $34.98.

You'll find disc details for 'Initial D' linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where it's indexed under January 22, 2008.
