Retailing at $379, Sharp’s BD-HP52U features Deep Color, BD-Live, and a streaming video service yet to be announced.
There’s a bit of mystery around the details of Sharp’s BD-HP52U. The latest Blu-ray player announced by the company, the HP52U is touted as having a great many features including premium streaming video. However, the “premium streaming video provider” is yet to be announced.
The BD-HP52U isn’t a bad BD player on its own, featuring 1080/24p output and x.v. color. The player also supports Deep Color for a superior color quality.
From an audio standpoint the BD-HP52U is fairly capable as well, featuring HQ Audio Circuits that deliver 7.1 channel sound through HDMI. The player supports HD audio formats Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio as well as Dolby Digital Plus.
The player launches in October and has, as of now, no announced streaming service. Sharp is quick to mention that they will be naming a service by the end of the month.

Sharp’s High End Blu-ray Player Gets an Upgrade
Fri Sep 11, 2009 at 02:15 PM ETTags: Sharp (all tags)
Sharp has granted a much needed revamping to the BD-UP50U, their former top shelf player.
While keeping the much loved RS-232 automation control of the BD-UP50U, Sharp’s new BD-UP52U brings things up to date. First and foremost, the BD-UP52U is BD Live capable, something not present on the former Profile 1.1 player.
A network adapter has been added, as well as compatibility with current HD audio codecs such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. In response to questions on the lack of streaming services available on the player, Sharp spokesman Melissa Non states that “We’re in the midst of signing a contract with Netflix,” and expects it to be available in November.
The BD-UP52U will ship in October at an MSRP of $379.

Announced earlier this week in Japanese business paper Nikkei, Sony and Sharp have finally put long anticipated joint venture plans into place.
This is a multibillion dollar deal that sets Sony up to have access to TVs made in Sharp’s Sakai plant. Sharp also plans to sell off additional stakes in the plant to companies such as Toshiba.
Not satisfied with just that, Sony may continue their expansion by enlisting Samsung to produce panels later this year. Reported in Korean newspaper Hankooki, Samsung is in talks to supply Sony with 40, 46 and 55 backlit LCD displays.

Sharp is focusing its energy on the High-Def LCD and Blu-ray markets with a series of TV announcements and the first LCD TV with a built in Blu-ray player.
“Sharp continues to show why we are an LCD leader. But we’re also introducing several new products that complete the home theater experience," said Bob Scaglione, senior vice president and group manager, Product and Marketing Group, Sharp Electronics Corporation. Some of the highlights of the products introduced this week at CES 2009 in Las Vegas include two new widescreen LCD TV lineups, an 82" 1080p LCD option, and what it calls the world’s first LCD TV with a built-in Blu-ray player.
First up are the E77U and E67U model lineups of AQUOS LCD TVs. According to the company's press release, the E77 models feature the new 10-bit Superlucent Advanced Super View (ASV) panels, which allow for brighter, crisper pictures with reduced haze and reflections. The units also make use of enhanced technology for 120 Hz Frame Rate Conversion and a dejudder feature to eliminates background motion artifacts on BD movies. The units also feature a 176 degree viewing radius, five HDMI inputs (yowsers!), two component inputs, and a dedicated PC input. As for the E67 models, they also make use of the ASV technology, while offering four HDMI inputs (still not too shabby), 24p input capability, and two component video inputs. All units are capable of 1080p video resolution. In addition to these offerings, Sharp is also proudly touting its new 82" class LCD display.

CES: Sharp Unveils Second-Gen Blu-ray Player
Sun Jan 06, 2008 at 07:54 PM ETTags: CES 2008, Sharp (all tags)
Emphasizing its commitment to the Blu-ray format , Sharp today announced its second-gen Blu-ray player, the BD-HP50U.
According to the company, the new player will be Profile 1.1 compliant and it may even support BD-Live (the fact that Sharp's press release seems to suggest that "Profile 1.1" and "BD Live" are synonymous doesn't inspire a lot of confidence on that last point).
We do know that the player will support both Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD via 7.1 channel HDMI digital output, and that it will boast Sharp’s proprietary Quick Start feature, which takes viewers from disc loading to viewing in less than 10 seconds.
Sharp says its BD-HP50U player will hit stores in May at an MSRP of $699.99.

CEDIA: Sharp Introduces BD-HP20U Blu-ray player
Thu Sep 06, 2007 at 01:55 PM ETTags: CEDIA, Sharp, Hardware (all tags)
After months of rumors, Sharp has finally unveiled their first next-gen disc player for the US, the AQUOS BD-HP20U Blu-ray player.
Due in stores later this month at an MSRP of $549.99, the new player will be the first non-LCD product in Sharp's US line to carry the AQUOS moniker.
Key features include 1080p/24 fps video, onboard decoding for Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD, and a built-in HDMI 1.3 AV interface.
The company says that all of the key components of the player were built by Sharp itself, including the Blu-ray laser, the pick-up beam, and the driver unit.
Athough the player doesn't appear to offer bit-stream audio output, Sharp's press release boasts of a "Quick Start" feature, which promises load-times of less than 10-seconds.
Cosmetically, the player features a black piano finish, and a "slim-profile" design. Gizmodo posted a series of photos of the unit earlier today, and indeed this puppy looks to be thin.

Sharp Readies First Blu-ray Player for Fall Release (UPDATED)
Fri Jul 06, 2007 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Hardware, Sharp (all tags)
UPDATE (7/10/07): Alas, it turns out this announcement refers to a Japanese release of the BD-HP205 only. No word on when (if ever) this deck is headed to the US. (PC World has the full update)
Sharp Electronics has announced it will release its first Blu-ray disc player in time for the holiday season.
Dubbed the BD-HP205, thus far Sharp has released only preliminary specs for the deck, which is due by late fall.
Expect 1080p output capability at both 24fps and 60fps, plus in-board Dolby TrueHD decoding.
The player is also slated to fully support HDMI v1.3, and includes analog 5.1 outputs as well.
Sharp is also touting a new 'Quick Start' feature, which will load a disc mere seconds after being inserted into the tray. This is likely to be viewed as a welcome addition by early adopters, as currently load times on Blu-ray (and HD DVD) players tend to be frustratingly slow.
The manufacturer has not yet announced an exact street or pricing for the BD-HP205, but we'll keep you posted. Watch this space!
