Warner Announces 'Woodstock' Director's Cut for Blu-ray
Wed Aug 06, 2008 at 03:00 PM ETTags: Disc Announcements, Music on High-Def, Warner (all tags)
In an unusually early announcement, Warner says it is planning to bring painstakingly-restored director's cut version of the documentary 'Woodstock' to Blu-ray in July 2009.
One of the definitive documentaries of its time, 'Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music' was previously released on standard DVD in 1997, but has since been placed on moratorium for several years. Warner will lift the embargo on July 28, 2009, when it debuts the Blu-ray day-and-date with a new standard DVD re-issue.
Culled from newly-found elements under the supervision of director Michael Wadleigh, the Blu-ray will feature a nearly four-hour version of the film which has been remastered and scanned in at 2K resolution and will be presented in 1080p video. A new Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround audio mix has also been created with the participation of original chief engineer Eddie Kramer.
Supplements announced for the release include an audio commentary with the filmmakers, the 40-minute documentary "The '60s and the Woodstock Generation," and rare archival documents featuring handwritten notes from festival attendees, studio archive letters, and souvenir collectibles.
Suggested retail price for the Blu-ray has not yet been set, but we'll keep you posted.

Neil Young Planning Multi-Disc Archive Series for Blu-ray
Wed May 07, 2008 at 03:00 PM ETTags: Disc Announcements, Music on High-Def, Warner Music Group (all tags)
There's no date yet, but Neil Young has unveiled plans to bring his Archives project to Blu-ray beginning this year with a ten disc compilation of his early and rare recordings.
The rock legend and Hall of Famer announced preliminary details of the eagerly-anticipated (and oft-delayed) project at a Sun Microsystems conference held yesterday in San Francisco. Spanning Young's career from 1963 to 1972, tentative plans call for the first installment to be released late this year via the Warner Music Group label.
In addition to high-resolution audio recordings of Young's music, each Blu-ray will boast videos, handwritten notes from the artist, rare photos, and more. Young also announced that the still-unnamed series will take full advantage of the Blu-ray format's BD-Live and BD-Java capabilities with advanced interactive features that can allow for additional updates to each release over time.
"Previous technology required unacceptable quality compromises." said Young. "I am glad we waited and got it right."
There are no further specs or supplement details for the as-yet-untitled Blu-ray series, but we'll certainly keep you posted on this precedent-setting release.
In the meantime, you'll find a preliminary listing for 'Neil Young: Untitled Archive Project' added to the "Release Dates Pending" section of our Blu-ray Release Schedule.

Sony BMG has announced a street date and specs for the John Mayer concert film 'Where the Light Is,' which will hit Blu-ray this July with a host of next-gen exclusives.
As previously reported, Sony had revealed plans to bring a previously-untitled John Mayer concert (recorded live at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre in December 2007) to Blu-ray sometime later this year, but stopped short of issuing any further details or even a street date.

Spanning 22 tracks, 'Where the Light Is' features three sets: an acoustic performance, a rare set with the John Mayer Trio (John Mayer, Steve Jordan, and Pino Palladino), as well as a set featuring Mayer’s full-band.
Captured with eight cameras and shot on Super35 film, the Blu-ray will feature 1080p/24fps video, plus audio options in PCM 2.0 Stereo (98kHz/24-bit) and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround (96kHz/24-bit).

Featured on both the Blu-ray and DVD is a bonus "Mulholland Drive" acoustic performance.
Retail for the Blu-ray has been set at $29.95.
