'Ghost in the Shell 2' Coming to Blu-ray

Making an early announcement to retailers, Bandai Visual has set an early-January Blu-ray date for 'Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence.'

A follow-up to the seminal anime 'Ghost in the Shell,' the sequel will receive its high-def premiere on January 13. (Bandai previously released a DVD version in 2005.)

Bandai has not yet released tech or supplement specs for the Blu-ray. Preliminary details do indicate a special edition, so we expect plenty of extras. We'll keep you posted.

Suggested list price for each Blu-ray has been set at $39.98.

FUNimation Sets 'Vexille' Blu for November

FUNimation has set an early-November debut for their latest Blu-ray release, a special edition of the popular anime 'Vexille.'

From acclaimed 'Ping Pong' filmmaker Fumihiko Sorin, 'Vexille' is an epic CGI tale of man and machine in a post-apocalyptic Japan. Following a smash theatrical run in its native country, the film has since gone on to enjoy a dedicated cult audience around the world

FUNimation has set a retail arrival of November 4 for the Blu-ray (the company previously released 'Vexville' on standard DVD in February 2007).

No tech specs or supplement details have been announced, although the Blu-ray is billed as a Special Edition, so we'll be on the lookout for plenty of extras.

Retail for the Blu-ray has been set at $34.95.

More 'Dragon Ball Z' Headed to Blu-ray

FUNimation has announced its next round of Dragon Ball Z, with a double-header of 'Return of the Cooler' and 'Cooler's Revenge' planned for Blu-ray this November.

Like the company's previous Dragon Ball Z double-feature releases, 'Dragon Ball Z: Return of the Cooler/Cooler's Revenge' will present both full-length animes on a single BD-50 dual-layer disc. FUNimation has set a November 11 street date for 'Return of the Cooler/Cooler's Revenge.'

There were no tech specs or supplemental details available for the release at press time, but we'll keep you posted.

As with past 'Dragon Ball Z' releases, suggested list price for the Blu-ray has been set at $34.95.

'Kitaro' Coming to Blu-ray

BCI has announced it is bringing the acclaimed 2007 anime 'Kitaro' to Blu-ray in mid-November..

Widely-praised as the most visually-spectacular big-screen adaptation of Mizuki Shigeru's much-loved manga series, BCI will debut the feature-length 'Kitaro' on Blu-ray November 18, day-and-date with the standard DVD.

BCI has yet to reveal tech specs for the release, but expect remastered 1080 video and some form of high-res audio.

At press time, there were no announced supplements.

Suggested retail price for the Blu-ray has been set at $24.95.

Bandai Visual Bringing 'Gunbuster'/'Diebuster' Trio to Blu-ray

Bandai Visual has set a late-November Blu-ray bow for a trio of titles in the popular 'Gunbuster' and 'Diebuster' anime series.

As first reported by Anime on DVD, Bandai will unleash three titles -- 'Diebuster the Movie,' 'Gunbuster the Movie' and 'Gunbuster vs Diebuster: Aim for the Top! The GATTAI!! Movie' -- on November 25th. Each is a stand-alone release, and will mark the series' first-ever appearance on high-def.

Tech specs announced thus far will see 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video and Japanese Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround audio with English and French subtitle options.

There is no word on supplements, but as always, watch this space.

Suggested retail price for each Blu-ray has been set at $49.98.

'Afro Samurai' Headed to Blu-ray this August

FUNimation has set a late-August Blu-ray debut for the first season of the animated series 'Afro Samurai.'

Previously released on Blu-ray in Japan by Pony Canyon, FUNimation will give the Samuel L. Jackson-voiced cult hit its stateside debut when it releases 'Afro Samurai: Season One' on August 26.

Specs include the entire five-episode arc presented in 1080 video and standard Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround (no language options have yet been confirmed).

Extras are slated to include two featurettes ("In the Booth: Voice Talent of Afro Samurai," "RZA Music Production Tour"), a set of character profiles and promo spots for 'Afro Samurai' and other FUNimation releases.

FUNimation has set a suggested list price of $29.98.

Bandai Planning 'Ghost in the Shell 2' Blu-ray

There's no street date yet, but Bandai Entertainment says it's planning to bring 'Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence' to Blu-ray sometime this year.

A sequel to the landmark anime 'Ghost in the Shell,' 'Innocence' was released last year on Blu-ray in Japan (distributed by Disney). Bandai has announced (via its official website) that it is currently preparing a 2008 domestic next-gen debut to coincide with a new standard DVD re-issue, marking the first time the film has been seen in high-definition in the States.

No tech specs or supplement details have been announced, but Bandai says a new English dub is currently being prepared for the US release, as well as other materials.

There is also no suggested list price available for the Blu-ray, but watch for full details to be revealed in the coming weeks.

'Robotech: Shadow Chronicles" to Hit Blu-ray this September

FUNimation has set an early-September Blu-ray debut for the latest chapter in the wildly-popular animated series 'Robotech.'

A feature-length film originally produced in high-definition, 'Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles' will arrive on Blu-ray on September 2.

Supplements ported over from the title's previous DVD release include a 20-minute making-of featurette. Brand-new to the Blu-ray will be deleted scenes (with optional director commentary), outtakes, and animatics.

No tech specs are available as of yet, but stay tuned for final details to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Retail for the Blu-ray has been set at $29.98.
