Time To Get Your Fuzzy Pink Elephant - HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide Feb 18, 2024

If you're ready for a slight breather, this week is that week. There are still a couple of decent titles still to ponder. Our 3 week countdown to those James Cameron 4K releases is on! Pinch me when it's real.

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 38 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of February 18th - February 24th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

It's a NO on the import Monday or Friday docket, and there are no New Releases either. But, let's get started on Domestic Tuesday catalog titles...

First from Paramount, Beverly Hills Cop III. Many that are not fans of this one are probably trying to compare it to the first 2 films, just don't do it. The completionist in me is glad to see it. And if you held out for the 3-Movie Collection, that's available too.

Next, Shout! Factory brings us 90s thriller Darkman. There is also a general release SteelBook option available as well.

A pair of releases come from Kino Lorber this week. First, action/thriller The Last Castle with Robert Redford and James Gandolfini. And next, in the we sort of expected it category, Leviathan gets a shiny new 4K release. When I think of underwater movies of that era, I think The Abyss, Deepstar Six and of course, this one.

From Criterion, The Heroic Trio / Executioners. If the big "C" wasn't on the fron cover, you would swear this was an Arrow Release.

And the last one in the 4K section, Sony Pictures offers us Paprika (2006), with Dolby Vision and a Dolby Atmos (Japanese) track. It is not 100% clear that the English 5.1 track is on the 4K disc, but one would certainly expect it to be.

Next week, between the Walmart Exclusives on Monday, and the Tuesday offerings, it could be another good sized and expensive week,

Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases? Leviathan gets a new special edition this week from Kino Lorber. And Criterion delivers with The Heroic Trio / Executioners. Everything else we already have.

If you have been following Criterion partner Janus Contemporaries, you would know that their next release, Afire is available this week.

For the Criterion label itself, a period drama film titled Nothing But a Man.

The next Kino Cult title,  spine number 6 comes out this week, titled Drifter.

Look for The Luzhin Defence from Sony Pictures Classics this week.

The Warner Archive release of Hanna-Barbera's Superstars 10: The Complete Film Collection awaits your order status. My order status is Pre-Ordered! Available individually as well, but the price of 3 or 4 gets you all 10, they are The Good, the Bad, and Huckleberry Hound, The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones, Rockin' with Judy Jetson, Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School, Scooby-Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf, Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers, Top Cat and the Beverly Hills Cats, Yogi and the Invasion of the Space Bears, Yogi Bear and the Magical Flight of the Spruce Goose and Yogi's Great Escape.

Anime highlight includes just Himouto! Umaru-chan R - Complete Collection (Premium Box Set).

Honorable mention because we love physical media, a random throw at you title from MGM, The Groom Wore Spurs.

For imports this week, on Thursday, Umbrella Entertainment's web shop exclusive releases. That means that general releases available on Amazon will follow in a couple of weeks.

Friday gives is a bunch of media books from Turbine Medien:

Then, just to keep it interesting, Amazon makes available a bunch of Umbrella Entertainment (and one Arrow title) available. I would expect to see Wolf Pack get a domestic release as that is on recent Paramount+ title:

Notable announcements from last week:

Criterion Collection has revealed their MAY 2024 slate of titles. Check out our news story.

Paramount will be releasing The Crow to 4K and 4K SteelBook on May 7th.

The Criterion Collection Dates & Details May 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray Releases

Criterion's May Blu-ray title announcements include A Story of Floating Weeds / Floating Weeds: Two Films by Yasujiro Ozu, Three Revolutionary Films by Ousmane Sembène, Justine Triet's Anatomy of a Fall, Karyn Kusama's Girlfight, and Michael Powell's Peeping Tom.  Only Peeping Tom will also be available on 4K UHD Blu-ray.

First up is A Story of Floating Weeds / Floating Weeds: Two Films by Yasujiro Ozu arriving May 7 on Blu-ray.

A Story of Floating Weeds / Floating Weeds: Two Films by Yasujiro Ozu

A Story of Floating Weeds / Floating Weeds: Two Films by Yasujiro Ozu

In 1959, Yasujiro Ozu remade his 1934 silent classic A Story of Floating Weeds in color with celebrated cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa. Setting his later version in a seaside location, Ozu otherwise preserves the details of his elegantly simple plot wherein an aging actor returns to a small town with his troupe and reunites with his former lover and their son, a scenario that enrages his current mistress and results in heartbreak for all. Together, the films offer a unique glimpse into the evolution of one of cinema's greatest directors. A Story of Floating Weeds finds Ozu in the midst of developing his mode of expression; Floating Weeds reveals his distinct style at its pinnacle. In each, the director captures the joy and sadness of everyday life.

A Story of Floating Weeds

Rich in backstage atmosphere and class-conscious insight, A Story of Floating Weeds was one of Yasujiro Ozu’s final silent films, and it displays his complete mastery of the form. With a vivid sense of character and the world of rural Japan, he sketches a poignant tale of family secrets, jealousy, and creative community, buoyed by grace notes of humanist observation and by luminous black-and-white cinematography that shows his spare yet lyrical visuals at their most soulful.

Floating Weeds

One of six sublime color masterworks that Yasujiro Ozu produced late in his career, the director’s second filming of his own 1934 silent triumph A Story of Floating Weeds represents the mature flowering of his style. Harnessing the full expressive potential of color, sound, music, and his exquisite compositional sense, he brings new depths of bittersweet feeling—tinged with an aging artist’s melancholic nostalgia—as well as a new air of expansiveness, to a story with enduring resonance.

Next on May 14, we have Michael Powell's Peeping Tom hitting 4K UHD Blu-ray as well as Blu-ray.

Peeping Tom (1960) - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Peeping Tom (1960) - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Having brought British cinema into exalted realms of fantasy and imagination, Michael Powell took a dark detour into obsession, voyeurism, and violence with this groundbreaking metacinematic investigation into the mechanics of fear. Armed with his killer camera, photographer and filmmaker Mark Lewis (Carl Boehm) unleashes the traumas of his childhood by murdering women and recording their deaths—until he falls for his downstairs neighbor, and finds himself struggling against his dark compulsions. Received with revulsion upon its release only to be reclaimed as a masterpiece, the endlessly analyzed, still-shocking Peeping Tom dares viewers to confront their own relationship to the violence on-screen.

Then on May 21 comes Three Revolutionary Films by Ousmane Sembène to Blu-ray.

Three Revolutionary Films by Ousmane Sembène

Three Revolutionary Films by Ousmane Sembène

Having blazed a trail for African filmmakers to tell their own stories on-screen, Senegalese auteur Ousmane Sembène took his career-long project—to unlock cinema’s potential as a vehicle for social change—in increasingly urgent and provocative directions in the 1970s. Searing critiques of colonialism, political corruption, patriarchal arrogance, and religious indoctrination, his three features from this decade—the radical call to resistance Emitaï, the wickedly subversive satire Xala, and the controversial historical epic Ceddo—confirmed his standing as a fearless truth-teller for whom the camera was the ultimate weapon in the fight against oppression in all its forms.

Emitaï

With revolutionary outrage, Ousmane Sembène chronicles a period during World War II when French colonial forces in Senegal conscripted young men of the Diola people and attempted to seize rice stores for soldiers back in Europe. As the tribe’s patriarchal leaders pray and make sacrifices to their gods, the women in the community refuse to yield their harvests, incurring the French army’s wrath. With a deep understanding of the oppressive forces that have shaped Senegalese history, Emitaï explores the strains that colonialism places upon cultural traditions and, in the process, discovers a people’s hidden reserves of rebellion and dignity.

Xala

An adaptation of Ousmane Sembène’s own 1973 novel, Xala is a hilarious, caustic satire of political corruption under an inept patriarchy. On the night of his wedding to his third bride, government official El Hadji (Thierno Leye) is rendered impotent and begins to suspect that one of his other wives has placed a curse on him. After seeking a cure from a local marabout, El Hadji must face the possibility that he deserves the infliction for his part in embezzling public funds and for helping to keep Senegal under French control. Adeptly combining elements of African folklore and popular cinema, Sembène indicts the hubris, entitlement, and opportunism of male authority figures.

Ceddo

In precolonial Senegal, members of the Ceddo (or “outsiders”) kidnap Princess Dior Yacine (Tabata Ndiaye) after her father, the king, pledges loyalty to an ascendant Islamic faction that plans to convert the entire clan to its faith. Attempts to recapture her fail, provoking further division and eventual war between the animistic Ceddo and the fundamentalist Muslims, with Christian missionaries and slave traders from Europe also playing a role in the conflict. Banned in Senegal upon its release, Ceddo is an ambitious, multilayered epic that explores the combustible tensions among ancient tradition, religious colonization, political expediency, and individual freedom.

THREE-DISC SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES

  • New 4K digital restorations of all three films, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks
  • New conversation between Mahen Bonetti, founder and executive director of the African Film Festival, and film writer Amy Sall
  • The Making of “Ceddo,” a 1981 documentary by Paulin Soumanou Vieyra
  • New English subtitle translations
  • PLUS: An essay by film scholar Yasmina Price

    New cover by Ify Chiejina

The last two titles both hit stores on May 28, the first of which is Justine Triet's Anatomy of a Fall.

Anatomy of a Fall

Anatomy of a Fall

The closer we look, the less we know in Justine Triet’s masterful Palme d’Or–winning Anatomy of a Fall, an eerily riveting courtroom thriller that examines the line where truth becomes fiction and fiction becomes truth. When Sandra Voyter (a transfixing Sandra Hüller), a writer who turns the material of her life into autofiction, is put on trial for the suspicious death by defenestration—or was it suicide?—of her husband, it opens up an inquiry that will turn a troubled home inside out. Tapping into the minimalist intensity of a chamber drama—and using intricate, elliptical editing—Triet constructs a mystery that is ultimately less about a death than about the hidden lives we lead.

DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES

  • 2K digital master, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack
  • New interview with director Justine Triet
  • Deleted and alternate scenes with commentary by Triet
  • Audition footage of actors Milo Machado Graner and Antoine Reinartz and rehearsal footage of Machado Graner and actor Sandra Hüller
  • Trailer
  • PLUS: An essay by critic Alexandra Schwartz

    New cover by Greg Ruth

And arriving on the same date is Karyn Kusama's Girlfight starring Michelle Rodriguez.

Girlfight

Girlfight

Bullied by her father at home and feeling adrift at school, Diana Guzman (Michelle Rodriguez) finds refuge in an unexpected pocket of her native Brooklyn—a timeworn boxing gym, where she learns to channel her strength, discovers a sense of community, and falls for a rival fighter. In Karyn Kusama’s raw, understated feature debut, Rodriguez commands the screen with both tightly coiled intensity and deep wells of vulnerability as a young woman hitting back at society’s expectations and her own personal demons. Capturing the full emotional weight of Diana’s journey and the kinetic thrill of bodies in motion, Kusama crafts a singularly uncompromising story of self-realization.

DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES

  • New 4K digital restoration, supervised by director Karyn Kusama and director of photography Patrick Cady, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack

Yorgos Lanthimos' Oscar Nominated "Poor Things" Coming to Blu-ray March 12

Nominated for 11 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Actress for Emma Stone,

Yorgos Lanthimos' latest darkly comedic creation comes to Blu-ray on March 12th - a 4K Digital option on Feb 27th.

In another frustrating and all-too-common occurrence for physical media collectors, the 4K release of Poor Things will be a digital-only release with only a 1080p option on disc. I guess considering a movie like Barbarian still doesn't have a disc release we should be somewhat grateful, but a film this visually exuberant demands the bigger better format. So it goes.

Poor Things - Blu-ray

This one should be up for pre-order soon, but check out the press release below for all the gory details.

Happy Collecting!

Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation. Also starring Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott and Jerrod Carmichael, “Poor Things” was written by Tony McNamara, based on the book by Alasdair Gray, and produced by Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone.

The Ballad of the Empty Wallet - HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, Feb 11, 2024

It's funny what a difference a single week makes. For 4K anyway, we go from a total drought to a well above average list. It's feast or famine I tell ya, and with the word Hunger in one of this week's releases, bring on the feast! This week could easily be a $500 week!

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 37 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of February 11th - February 17th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

Import Monday begins with a pair of titles. First from 101Films, look for Alligator. It comes in a fancy looking package and also includes a bonus blu-ray of Alligator II.

And next from Arrow Video, a fat-pack release of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978). Kino did an excellent domestic release, so if you're happy with that, probably no reason to import this. Note: Although a release date of the 12th, we had to update our link to Amazon US (with a 2/23 street date) because Amazon UK is showing sold out.

If those didn't make your wallet tingle a bit, let's get ready to feel the burn with Domestic Tuesday releases.

There are THREE new release titles this week. For movies, going with the higher rated one first (and probably better quality AV too... BD100/Dolby Vision), from LionsGate, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Available as a Standard Edition, an Amazon Exclusive Edition and a Walmart Exclusive SteelBook.

And second, Disney/Marvel, 2023's The Marvels, which comes as a Standard Edition and a Walmart Exclusive SteelBook.

Still in the new releases category, BBC Nature's Planet Earth III. This one still features David Attenborough behind the mic.

It has been a short hop from there to here, Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection: Volume 4 becomes available this week. Six more films from their film vault to tide us over a bit. Can we say Volume 5?

We got Flashdance, we got Dirty Dancing, it's only inevitable we also get Footloose from Paramount. Also available as a SteelBook featuring an alternative cover art. Thanks, now I got Kenny Loggins stuck in my head.

Universal has another batch of 4K upgrades to recent blu-ray releases. First, Harriet, based on the story of freedom fighter Harriet Tubman. And second, Ticket to Paradise with George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

Universal's final release of the week, (previously delayed from last year) Universal Classic Monsters: Limited Edition Collection. This one is limited to a quantity of 5500 and each one is individually numbered. I'm still trying to picture how this set will come, the photo shows a book and 8 loose discs.

Shout! Factory brings us Willy's Wonderland, with what Bryan says is a great-looking video presentation. This one is also available as a general release (not Walmart exclusive) SteelBook.

Friday import from Turbine Medien Group, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas gets a standard slipcover edition release.

Next week's slate should be a bit gentler on our finances, a decent amount of releases, just not box sets. Get ready for Beverly Hills Cop III, Leviathan, Darkman, and a tad more!

Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases include The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and The Marvels.

The rest of the blu-ray category is a bit light this week.

From LionsGate, Priscilla, an Elvis Presley story from the eyes of Priscilla Beaulieu.

Criterion Collection this week has Eric Rohmer’s Tales of the Four Seasons.

Fear Is the Key debuts to blu-ray from Arrow Video. Crossing the Pacific, The Shaolin Plot also gets an Arrow Video Limited Edition.

TV On Disc this week includes Boystown - The Complete Season 1, Flunk - Season 1, Flunk - Season 2, Flunk - Season 3, 'Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. - The Complete Series'  and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon - Season 1 [SteelBook].

Anime highlights include One Piece: Season Thirteen - Voyage Five and Spy x Family Season 1 Part 2, which comes as a Standard Edition and as a Limited Edition.

Boutique label Radiance Films has the thriller Goodbye & Amen.

The Shout Select label has Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny with Jack Black.

Honorable mentions from Kino Lorber, Blood on the Sun with James Cagney debuts to blu-ray this week, as does Let's Dance, a musical with Fred Astaire.

Notable announcements from last week:

Paramount has revealed that Mean Girls (2004) will also be getting a special edition 4K, with a release date of April 30th.

Universal pictures is adding more and more TV shows to blu-ray. Added are complete series for Suits, Heroes (2006-2016) and The Act.  I know I buy all the ones that I am remotely interested in, so should you!

Up for order on Amazon is Warner Bros' 4K of The Departed. Exact date TBA.

A Momentary Lapse of Releases - HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, Feb 4, 2024

Let's take this week to recharge our wallets a little bit. With just one Domestic 4K title and a handful of blu-rays, it's a momentary lapse of releases! Twenty points for the first one that gets the reference.

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 36 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of February 4th - February 10th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

For Domestic Tuesday this week, we get the 1971 Western McCabe & Mrs. Miller starring Warren Beatty and directed by Robert Altman, brought to us by Criterion.

Thursday releases, a pair of standard editions from Turbine Medien Group out of Germany, The Deep House and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. They previously did media books for both titles, and neither title has gotten a 4K release in the US, see where this is going?

Next week, watch out as we see a higher than average schedule. It's feast or famine I tell ya! The Marvels, Hunger Games, Footloose and a ton more!

Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases? Turbine has The Deep House and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer for import.

If you were a boutique label, this week would be a great week to sell sell sell! How about a horror that could easily be confused with a board game? Yeah, Candy Land would be that title.

A relatively new label to the US, Radiance Films this week has the Japanese language drama The Sting of Death available to purchase.

Weekly Anime highlights include Handyman Saitou in Another World - The Complete Season, Revenger - The Complete Season and Tears to Tiara - Complete Collection.

Shout! Factory this week offers up the horror/thriller Funeral Home, as well as the sci-fi/thriller The Terminal Man: 50th Anniversary Edition. With Elon Musk in recent news behind a company offering neural implants, this one could become very real!

If you have been following Jess (Jesús) Franco's career, you can check off another release with Voodoo Passion from Full Moon Features.

In the blu-ray category next week, we see a slight uptick in titles available.

The last couple of slow weeks I have shared a YouTube link or two. Have fun with this one.. if you like ABBA: Dancing Queen, it was remastered to 4K. So 70's! Mamma Mia anyone?

A decade forward and it's all about the hair, and the spandex. This one looks fantastic in 4K. Rick Astley!

Notable announcements from last week:

Shout! Factory's various labels have announced their April slate of titles. So far we are looking at Rolling Thunder on 4K, and for blu-rays, Affliction, Blue Giant, Lost in Space (movie) and Winnie the Pooh: Blood & Honey. Winnie The Pooh was already released to a Walmart Exclusive SteelBook last October, so this is a general release. There are 4K options for Pooh overseas, Italy, France and Germany.

Action Speaks Louder Than Words - Shop HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, Jan 28, 2024

It's probably time to queue up that doom and gloom armageddon type music because this week could be very harmful to your wallets/credit card balances. Between 4K and blu-ray we have not seen a week this big in quite some time!

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 35 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of January 28th - February 3rd, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

Oh, and the tagline above, that's actually for Silent Night.

4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

Import Monday begins with the 1971 Michael Caine crime/thriller Get Carter. Everything else that was slated for Monday got pushed back a couple of weeks.

And moving on to Domestic Tuesday, let's begin with Silent Night - Walmart Exclusive SteelBook. If you want this one in 4K, Walmart is where you have to go as a standard edition 4K is currently not slated for release. I cannot confirm this yet but it appears this will be online only, which is a head-scratcher as this one would generate a lot of foot traffic.

On to catalog titles, first from Severin Films for a trio of films, Bad Biology, Nightmare and The Psychic.

From Kino Lorber this week, The Boogens and Scarlet Street.

This week is the week to get your fix of Conan films from Arrow Video. The trio of skus include Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer and The Conan Chronicles. The Conan Chronicles shows a release date of February 20 on Amazon, but Arrow Video has indeed confirmed it still has a January 30th street date, and I did get a shipping confirmation from Arrow Video. My guess is Amazon will not get their stock until the 20th. With the B&N sale going on, Amazon appears to be matching the 50% off pricing, so pounce on this if you want it.

MVD has their next Laservision Collection release this week with Cutting Class. Thus far this series of releases has been done quite well.

From Vinegar Syndrome, general releases of D.A.R.Y.L.eXistenZ and The Prophecy I -II-III, and a store direct release of Freeway 1 & 2, which comes in a hard case. Collectors will generally opt for the direct store releases as they almost always contain nicer packaging, while the release on Amazon is a standard edition, often times no slipcovers or swag.

Criterion this week offers up Trainspotting.

Next week we get a chance to recharge wallets with just one title.

Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases include a lot,  Silent Night, Bad Biology, Nightmare, The Psychic, The Boogens, Scarlet Street, Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer, The Conan Chronicles, Cutting Class and Trainspotting.

New Eli Roth horror Thanksgiving comes to blu-ray this week, which, in my opinion, a huge missed opportunity for a 4K release. Sony doesn't usually do the double-dip game as much as Universal does when it comes to a blu-ray first, 4K next, so, best of luck on waiting for a 4K disc. Maybe a Turbine release in the future?

TV on disc includes The Abbott and Costello Show: Season 2 and Monk: Season Three.

Criterion blu-ray this week, Mudbound, a film based in the 40s along the Mississippi Delta.

Warner Archive's January batch releases this week, they include Cabin in the Sky, A Day at the Races, Faithless, Joe's Apartment, The Prince and the Pauper (1937) and Rover Dangerfield.

Anime highlights this week, Bocchi the Rock! - The Complete Season, The Case Study of Vanitas - Season 1 Part 2, Kurokami: The Animation, Lovely Complex, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha: TV Series 1, Naruto Shippuden Set 2, Ningen Fushin Adventurers Who Dont Believe in Humanity Will Save the World and Sailor Moon Super S: Complete Fourth Season.

From Arrow Video this week, Murphy's War featuring the 'iconic' actor Peter O'Toole.

Next week in this category, another chance to recharge that wallet of yours.

Notable announcements from last week:

Warner Bros has made it official, Wonka will be streeting to 4K and blu-ray on February 27.

Michael Mann's Ferrari will be coming to blu-ray on March 12. A 4K release is coming to Italy, and with Michael Mann at the helm I have to wonder if a 4K double-dip will be coming to the US.

Arrow Video has announced their April 2024 slate, for the US market they include Basket Case in 4K, with a shop exclusive option, and blu-rays of The Scarface Mob and The Tin Star. There are no 4K imports to mention in this batch.
